Regestering an old vehicle from the EU ??
Whats involved in regestering an old car (over 10 years) from another EU country ?
I've been looking on that direct.gov site but its usless - all the links just send you round in circles
all I have managed to get is this: "UK residents are not allowed to use non-UK registered vehicles on UK roads"

typical Gov site it tells you little but "contact DVLA"
Been thinking about doing the same thing importing some old three wheel pickups from Italy but to make even remote financial sense it would have to be
half a dozen or so in the one trip. And then no guarantee they would be capiable of meeting the braking requirements to register here.
Let us know how you get on.
Cheers!
You'd be surprised how quickly the sales people at B&Q try and assist you after ignoring you for the past 15 minutes when you try and start a
chainsaw

I'm actually interested. Do I take it these are in tax-and-MOT-able condition?

Always wanted a LHD car, and to be fair I'm not exactly going to be in a rush to overtake people in a 126! I mean what's the top speed,
65?
Well there's an oddity... Just stuck a quick quote into the comparison site.. 88 E plate, value £300... Fire and theft came out at £330 ish.
Fair enough, I thought, I bet full comp isn't much more...
It's £50 quid cheaper

Get it insured on the VIN (with Adrian Flux or the like - they do 2 weeks max I think), you need to get the car and it's EU registration
document to UK, then get it MOT'd, then take those docs and get it registered at your local VRO, then tell the insurer the Reg No.
Call me if unclear.

There's 2 on autotrader right now with Polish plates.. Apparently they're both 1999 models though, so that'll confuse half the
insurance people

I was in poland for a week and I must have seen hundreds and hundreds of them on the roads and nearly all of them were that same red colour

Yeah it appears over 3 million were made in Poland, and another million by Fiat.
Also this site states the top speed is 72mph, with a 0-60 of 33 seconds. I
wonder if they use a standard weight driver in that one, because I'll be laughing if I hit 70 with my pie-laden body in it!

what are you waiting for then - get yourself over to poland
just remeber to fill it with as much vodka (or rather Wódka) as it can carry before you come back

With about 26 horsepower on tap I reckon that's about two cases then!

Plan: I'm due to get loads of work, so save money
Bog off to Poland and pick one up
Call insurance company and have an "adventurous" few days driving it home
Remember to tell Orange I'm leaving the country and make sure my phone works!
I know a guy in Poland so if all else fails at least I know someone who could help me there!
Might be better to get a trailer... It'll be under the cat E weight limit
Or is there one of those import companies?

Will you need to make modifications for MOT?
I remember a guy at work who had to change his speedo to MPH, and move the Fog light from one side to the other.
In his case it was a Nova (he is German) and it cost him about the same as the cost of the car as he had to get a garage to do it.
Maybe it depends on the MOT station.

Well the reverse and fog lights are separate from the bodywork so I imagine that would be pretty easy. I've seen motorbikes with speedos in km
and they've stuck 2 little stickers where 30 and roughly 60-70 would be.
I might well need some rhd headlamps though...

Yes, people put nasty stickers to convert KPH to MPH when they bring in cars from Japan.
Sounds like an interesting exercise. I'd be interested to see if it works, as I have a couple of 'spare' gsxr1100 engines that
could work nicely in 126, but if I had to IVA it wouldn't be worth bothering.
I probably need to build a garage first though.
Really interested in how this all works out for you.

I don't need the stickers, 50kph is just under 30... Top speed is (apparently) 72mph so I'd have to be booting it to break other speed
limits.. I think 60 is just below 40mph too but I can always check this on my current car.
I hope this works out too... My parents had a 126 when they were new here and I liked it, I'd quite like something to thrash

i got a mk1 transit from germany a few years back, just took german reg doc to local dvla place and paid i think 55 quid for doc fee, got a years tax
at same time, very easy, if a vehicle is over 10 years old it don't need sva, although from eu it shouldn't need sva anyway

Forgot to mention ..
- I recommend ordering the appropriate vehicle import pack from DVLA website. It comes by post with all the registration forms and instructions
in.
- Yes, you need an MPH speedo and GB headlights for MOT.
