Changing the Locks on a Fiesta

Following the theft of some keys, I've changed all the locks on my son's 1999 Fiesta, but the immobiliser won't let the car start with the new ignition lock. Does anyone know how I can get the immobiliser to recognise the new lock and key?

Also does anyone know how to change the lock on the fuel cap?

do you have an old key ? you need the rdif chip that is programed to the ecu.

Its a main dealer job to reprogram the ecu to the new keys.

Or you need the ECU from the car that the keys came from...

Keys and ECU are paired but they can be reprogrammed if you have the original red key?

as you changed all the locks sound like you havent got any of the keys? if this is the case then as said above you need the ECU to match/recognise the key either by getting the ECU matiching the lock set you got or main dealer reprogramme. alternatively if you just changing the locks as added security as a set stolen then just change the doors and keep the orignal ignition, but if stolen from home can you clame on house insurance for it all?

I've got the original spare key, and have used that to take the lock cylinder out. It's not a red key but it has got a red insert in the top. I've bought a new full set of locks with keys, which also have a red insert in the top. With the new cylinder fitted the ignition turns on but the starter won't turn over.

if you have the old key you can if your carefull cut out the old transponder (looks like a glass pill) and fit it into a new key. cut the old key along the side and remove the red part keeping it intact then dig out the red part on the new key and replace with the old red bit and transponder.

does the fuel cap have a c clip on the rear of the lock holding it in

Drill a 4mm hole in the red cap, be carfull as the rdif chip is made of glass. About 7mm.

pop a 4mm rod in and prize the red cap out.

Do the same with the new key.

Swap chips and push red cap back in with a smear of glue and fill the hole in the top with another blob of glue.

Ive done this a few times. Do this with the new key first to get a feel for how deep to drill.

On latter cars the alarm modual is also paired to the ecu along with the key so its not as easy as just swaping the ecu.

To reprogram keys at home you would need the red key for early cars or both keys for later cars.

Thanks everyone, that gives me some options. If I swap the chip over, I take it the key that was stolen would not be able to be used with the new lock?

The key wont work the lock. But if he put the key in barrell and took the switch of the back, and turned it with a screwdriver it would start.

But thats not going to happen.

You could just glue the key near the antena behind the cowling.

Again it would mean no immobilizer but you would have to weigh up the value of the car and the risk against the cost of re-coding the ecu.

If you do glue the key behind the cowling you will have to play with the position as they have a very low range.
