Registering foreign cars in the UK

What would i have to do if i wanted to import a foreign car (+20years old)? Would insurance be a problem (import and all that)? Any experiences/notes useful.

Thanks in advance, Arry.

A friend of mine brought his car with him when he came back from living in Oz. He had to put it through an SVA, with all the pain that entails. It failed on the tyres first time. Perfectly legal in australia, but not E marked!

Insurance shouldn't be too much of a problem, though, as most of the kit-car insurers tend to do imports and specials as well.

Where is it being imported from?

As I understand it, EEC should be easy but anywhere else could be trickier.

Don't know for sure, though

If the car is 20 years old it's dead simple

You get it shipped over and MOT it. Fill in a V55/5 and send to DVLA with proof of insurance, MOT and a cheque for registration fee + tax.

Insurance through any of the specialist brokers will be easy enough to sort (I'm with A-Plan at the moment), can't really say how pricey it is as there's no equivalent UK model to my car.

I imported mine in October last year, 15 years old so again no need for SVA or anything
