USB to IRDA Infra Red adapter

Anyone help?

I have a Nokia camera phone with IR output. I bought a cheap generic USB to IRDA adapter and installed it.

It worked first time, great. I then unplugged the adaptor when laptop off, to use laptop elsewhere. I powered up and the laptop ran fine, powered down and returned to office.

Plugged all together again and powered up BUT the IR refused to work or even be acknowledged. Since then no amount of install, uninstall will resume the IR, it's most frustrating especially as I had multiple problems with Bluetooth. I abandoned that in favour of IR.

Control Panel, System, Devices shows IR device working correctly but it isn't. Now it will not uninstall or reinstall. It refuses to recognise the inf file and claims that it doesn't contain any IR info !!

I'm at a loss, I've tried deleting IRCOMM.DLL and IRMON.exe from the system files but they re-install immediately on their own!! I believe if I can stop them I can get the system to recognise the P&P IRDA and reinstall.

PS Sorry should have said. Win ME is op system.
Anyone? Desperate of Donny!

I have an inbuilt infrared port on my laptop, and had problems connecting it to my sony ericsson. I found that if you boot up your laptop and as soon as windows has loaded without opening any other programs, try to connect the phone and laptop, it usually works. I havent had anymore problems. There is also a setting in BIOS (you have to access it before the system boots) for the IR, that can be fettled with. May not be on yours as your IR is external.

Hope this helps

Try disabling the plug'n'play operating system in bios and do a manual install. I had similar with a modem after I had removed and replaced it with another.
Or the universal plug and pray in windows
Windows ME:

Click Start, then select Control Panel.
Select Settings, then select Add/Remove Programs.
Select the tab titled Windows Set-up.
In the Components field, select Communications.
Scroll down and uncheck the box to the left of Universal Plug and Play.
Click OK to exit the dialogue, then close the Windows Set-up dialogue.
Reboot the machine.

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

You're not using win nt are you?
I know it has known issues with IR. (Driver issues)

Make sure you download all the latest MS updates and the drivers from the mfg.

If that doesn't fix it, try Norton Windoctor or similar. It might fins the clashing drivers.

Ian

Well, deeply embarrasing moment time.

From a so called technologically capable guy, a funny tale.

Turns out IR was there all along and just needed a signal to wake up and start

BUT

it does help if you face the IR window towards the adapter.

Yes, that's right, I had a previous phone with IR window at top so I pointed the new one that way. Turns out the IR window is at 90 degrees from that!!!!

God knows how I ever built a car!
