Halfords engine enamel

I know this has been touched on in an older thread but the exact question I have wasn't answered.

And that is... Is the Halfords enamel ok for alloy blocks?

StuartA and I have just picked up our 'blade engine and want to give it some TLC.

So has any BEC owner painted their block? If so, with what have you painted it dear liza, dear liza

I dont know about alloy blocks, but I have just painted my modified sump with the stuff. It goes on like weak p*ss, anf if you try a second coat, it pickles up like dash crackly paint.

(took ages to sand it all off)

Oh dear, that's no good.

Anyone else got a decent paint job on alloy then?

I've used it in the past to paint magnesium alloy VW aircooled blocks and had no problems with it.
Brush painted them and they came out quite well.

I used the high temperature stuff to paint my manifold which looks like it's made of some kind of cast ali, and that went on fine, did take four coats just to get it half way looking good though.

Halfords engine paint is fine - BUT depending on what colour you buy it does tend to seperate while it's stood on the shelf (lets face it engine paint isn't going to be a huge seller at Halfords!). Red always seems to be ok for some reason but black or silver need a serious amount of stirring as there is usualy a gloopy layer lining the bottom of the tin and a lot of thinners above it - a bit of very gentle heat and 10 minutes of intensive screwdriver stiring action sorts it out. Yes it's still thin but how thick an insulating layer of paint do you want on your engine?
OK it should work straight out of the tin but it does do the job if you treat it properly.

Thanks for the comments guys.

We'll be trying the red halfords stuff and I'll post back the results at some point.

I used engine enamel from MOSS on my Austin Healey Sprite engine and have had no problems ( done 3000 miles now ).
This is an iron block but also used paint on aluminium gearbox casing.
Paint goes on well and is avaiable in tin or spray. Used spray for my rocker cover and the finish is brilliant, nice deep gloss.
An other source for engine paint is FROST.

Good luck.
