Pick up pipe to sump bottom clearance

How close should the pick up pipe be to the bottom of the sump?

Cut the duratec one yesterday, and might be a bit short?

The angle is correct as fitted in the mondeo (not my wonky cutting! ) Got 5mm at the close end and 8mm at the other.

ok or too much?

Difficult to tell from the pic, but is it plastic?

Also, does it not have a strainer of some kind or is there something inside?

As for cleareance, I would have though 5mm would be about right to keep it fully submerged but not sucking right of the bottom of the pan.

It is plastic yes, and the strainer is built in further up the pipe (where it turns to be horizontal)

I think I'd try and get it a little bit closer if it was me.

are you putting baffles in too?

Have a look at my duratec thread, the sump is well baffled.

I'll try and get another pick up pipe and make it a bit closer I think.

Thanks guys

The difference on the duratec i guess is that the sump is only 75mm deep to start with, and when full has 70mm of oil in.

I have ordered another pick up pipe anyway (only £15 from ford )and will chop it so the clearance is 5mm and the end of the pipe is level with the bottom of the sump too. Will then put my mind to rest at least.

I used a piece of plastercine squashed between the strainer and sump to work out the depth befor i chopped it then beat a crator in the base so not too close to give a little more protection from sucking up sh1te. I think the gap was about 7mm before chopped.
Mine is a 2L zetec black top
