waterpump & belts question

I have a 1.8 zetec and I have heard the water pump turns the opposite direction so I have to route the belts differently and use a different belt. I think its just the 2.0 that has this problem but can any one clue me up?

As I understand it the 2.0 one goes the wrong way and most people fit a 1.8 pump to solve the problem.

Duratec Engine is fitted, MS2 Extra V3 is assembled and tested, engine running, car now built. IVA passed 26/02/2016

Think it depends on whether its a silver top or blacktop, I thought the 1.8 pump thing was only for the silvertop and the only two things that can be done to a blacktop is to add another idler pulley to reverse the direction or pay nearly £150 to get an impellor from the states that turns the other way.

Although I could be right off the mark I'll be interested to hear other peeps thoughts.

Cheers

Rich

You are correct Richard, apart from the silvertop 1.8 Mondeo pump also works in reverse.Only the Escort pump runs the right way.
An idler is an easy way to make a silvertop Mondy pump run the right way.The blacktop is the same.
I have an idler fitted on my 2.0 silvertop.

I used a 1.8 escort pump and grooved pully and a belt from unipart to suit. If you can keep serpentine belt then you may be ok.

Its definatley a silver top and looking from the front of the engine, once I've stripped eveything I'm left with the crank, the pump and the alternator all of which turn in the same direction. So I guess the question is "does the 1.8 silver top water pump turn in the same direction as the crank or not?"

something like this

IT depends on the car that the engine came out of.The Escort pump turns the same way as the crank, the Mondeo pump turns the opposite.
An easy way to be fairly certain which car it is out of is,if the pulley is ribbed it is from an escort. If it is flat it from a Mondeo.

StevenB,

I can take a photo in the morning and post it if you still need it.
