Propshaft out of phase?

Been getting bad vibration around 70mph, checked all the usual suspects. Took the propshaft off, and it looks out of phase to me.
"A" looks OK, but "B" doesn't, am I reading this right?

I can see what your saying. It's 90 degrees out at the engine end. But I would say why has it all of a sudden appeared?

Have you had the slider out for any reason? Some are master splined..... But again why has it just started doing it? I'd check the bolt that hold the horse shoe in place in the middle. Where you'd strip it to replace centre bearing. Has that come loose? Maybe it's me, but it looks wonky.

Yes you are reading it right, the left hand half of the propshaft has the UJ's out of phase.

Is there a splined/sliding coupling on the left hand of the shaft? If so can you take it out and move it by 90 degrees?

Hi
If you moved the splines before or are going to move the splines to put it in phase
Then you will need to get the propshaft balanced
if you move just one spline its enough to put the propshaft out of balance
and hence the vibration,
That is of course that bearing & CV joints are ok.

stevio73, it's always done it, just been too busy driving, now the cars in hibernation I can get on with the niggling bits
MokeRJ, yes it is a sliding coupler, I'll see if it has a master spline or not. I am going to have a TRT fitted so the phasing can be put right, now that I know my suspicion is correct.

Everything is as it has always been, it's only done 1800miles, you just assume that the company building the prop know what they are doing.
I have phoned around for a quote locally, Rotherham/Sheffield/Chesterfield and it doesn't fill me with confidence that none of them knew what a TRT was.

I notice 'witness marks' on the right hand shaft, (the silver stripe)
what has been rubbing on it?

That was caused by the prop catcher when the diff mounts failed, that was only recently, but another reason for a rebuild.
The vibration isn't any worse than before, but I'm not happy with it as it is.

My understanding is that to have perfect phasing, you would need 2 pairs of UJ's.
So as this is the standard Sierra layout, the phasing is not perfect , but in normal use close enough and with a little compensation provided by the centre bearing deflection, acceptable in production.
So it may be down to balance, or your application?
I'll try and check mine later for sanity!

Which end have you got the slider? Mine is on the engine end, but Bailey Morris say it should always be on the diff end, could it be flexing, whereas on the diff end it would possibly be pretty rigid?
Another thing said on the Bailey Morris site is that the centre bearing should be used to put slight pressure on the gearbox output shaft!

Had my propshaft made by bailey morris with the slider at the engine end. I told them that was how i wanted it.

i too have bad vibration, from about 45mph though. What does phasing mean with regards to a propshaft?

Well this gets more interesting!
I had the slider at the engine end. With a fixed diff/IRS you don't need it to slide with movement in the axel.

I removed my prop over 12 months ago when I fitted MNR reverse box and twin props.
I wish I hadn't bothered but thats another story.
The prop in the pic had been happy four 5 years, but when I took it out I found that he centre UJ bolt holding it to the short end by the centre bearing had worked loose and I still had no problems with vibration.

Looking at it now, for the picture I noticed that the sliding end is actually out of phase by about 1 spline!, I've never had that end off and the loose UJ by the centre bearing will only fit in one location. Oh and just to add, the centre bearing actually feels quite worn too.
This makes me think that something needs to be quite bad to get the vibration you describe.
