What other Engines can I use?

Hi, I am pretty new to the builder scene and am trying to find a RWD engine, apart from the Pinto as there are not a lot left, What other Engines can I use? I have looked on a few sites and the only other engines and g/boxes mentioned come from a Toyota Carolla, but these were no brit sites. thanks for your help

Have a look at locostcarclub.co.uk there is a list on there of all the combinations used by club members.
I think the club membership is still £10 subs per year UK,and has a good newsletter too(cheap as chips)

stuart taylor motorsport must have wasted an afternoon putting the Locorage on his website then!!!!!!

alternatively there are numerous bike engined sites through the bike engined car egroup

if you have the new version of the "good book2 by St Ron of Champion, you;ll note the glossy pix of anything from a cosworth to a v8

I even had a thought about an m16 engine out of a peugeot, citroen, 160bhp standard and 2 in this weeks admag at less than £500

how about a mazda rotary engine out of an RX7, theres a rotary engined escort rallying out there using a ford 4 sp box

No seriously, I still have a running engine and gearbox from a Y reg corolla coupe 1.6SR. The model before the GT. It was fitted with a twin Carb engine and RWD 5 Speed box. The engine from this was the 2T-B, the lesser 1600 corollas were fitted with the 2T ( single carb) and could be found on carinas and celica's of that era. Might be a bit rare to find anywhere these days but gives you an option. I can measure the overall height if it helps.

Next door neighbour keeps trying to get rid of a B plate 735 Bimmer. Not sure if that's any good to anyone? I'm guessing the engine would be far too big & heavy but if anyone knows different you'd get it off him for nowt.

Thanks again guys, not sure about the bike engine (at the momment) seems to much of a chew on, seen as this will be my first ever build I am going to try to stick to the plan as much as possible.

Bike engine ?, probably easier instalation than all the others, all electrics controlled by one box, no belts for alternators ect..... even room under bonnet for a spare wheel if you don't want one hanging out the rear, pick it up with one hand , lower it in, and forget about it
But like Dave said above, only limit is your imagination.

What about a Opel Manta, Volvo 340 could later be swapped to a 5 turbo (i think)

How high can the engine be without me having to make any alterations to the books specifications? I guess that the height under the hood isn't high enough for bigger engines. There are no measurements in the book.

I have calculated the height to be 12 inches to the top chassis rail and 10 inches for the bonnet. That is the standard size but due to my V6 with the injection plenum chamber on the top I have increased the bonnet to 11 inches and will have a 3 or 4 inch bulge (oo er misses).

The v6 is about 23 inches wide from engine mount to engine mount.

Obviously, the best engine is a 2.7 litre honda V6 out of an old rover 800. 180bhp, 170ft lb, only a little bit heavier than a 2.0 pinto, ten-a-penny.

Of course you then need to make an adapter plate/mod a bellhousing, but it's worth it (I hope).
