Jeep loosing ATF any ideas?

Hi all,

Anyone have any experience with Jeeps?
my old boy has an 02 grand cherokee 2.7tdi it started pouring out what looked like emulsified oil. Very creamy. Its coming from somewhere behind the engine but at or above the top of the gearbox as oil is coming down both sides.
Its in murrays in Glasgow and all they want to do is change the gearbox module £600 and flush clean oil through the box until its clean and fill it up and seal it.
I have been giving them the oil and they have gone through 20 liters so far and want more.

They say they cant see where water would get in. The breather pipework is apparently all present and correct. The gearbox is oil cooled off the radiator but the car has never lost any water in over a year so it doesn't look like its coming from there. There is no oil in the coolant.

Its a real pain as the only reason it gets put in there is there is no atf dipstick. It has to be set by the Pros.


Anyone have any experience or ideas or know a better jeep guy in the Glasgow area?


As always I put my faith in the mighty LCB.

I have a 98 Cherokee and my son has a 98 Grand Cherokee, the at dipstick is on the drivers side (UK) next to the firewall.
They don't sell diesels over here, anymore, some Cherokees and a few Grand Cherokees, ours are all petrol.
The transmission should have a drain plug on the pan.
Check the rad for similar creamy material as the cooling tubes for the transmission run through the lower portion of the rad.
My Jeep has a transmission oil cooler, the fluid goes into the bottom of the rad then through the cooler then back to the transmission.
Is it possible that this fluid is coming off the back of the engine (as in blown head gasket)?
According to my 2001 factory manual the transmission holds 8.4 L at overhaul.
These transmissions are very reliable, mine has 234,000 km. with two minor services, my sons has 310,000 km. with an unknown service record (his winter beater as his RX8 sits cosy and warm waiting for spring).

Hi,
dont think its from the engine side as it has never used any water also there is no trace of oil in the cooling side.


I have had a look on various forums and found that box sits in lots of cars. One fault that has been noted is the atf fill tube can leak at the point where it goes into the box.
This can let the water in.

It kind of make sense as it started to loose drive and rev quite high. We thought it had lost oil so put a liter in to get it to the garage. When we started it oil poured out from this area. So I reckon there was no oil leak. Water got in and made it loose drive and we overfilled it making it force its way out.
At the garage they said the fill in pipe looked to be sitting about 5mm higher than it should but didn't think this to be a problem.
I'll have them look at it again.

It can only be the transmision oil cooler that is built into the rad ---- this the only possible cause

It needs a rad rebuild the attention of of an automatic transmision specialist --- won't be cheap as the torque convertor will be full of water and can't be drained without being fully reconditioned.

Mackie Automatic Transmissions in Tollcross are Scotands and possibly the UK leading autobox re-conditioner.

Glassgow Radiator (also in the east end) should be able to fix the radiator.


But the truth is it may be uneconomic to repair.

Surely that would have an effect on the levels in the cooling system though?
