As Seabass said, Good luck. I'm in Kent and have been looking for a while but they really are becoming rare as rocking horse sh*t. The scrappies are getting wise too, see here. Mention the words 'building a car' and you can see the pound signs light up in their eyes.

Have you tried placing an ad in 'Ad Trader' or putting a card in the window of your local shops.
Tell all your friends and family.
Trawl the streets at night
There are some still out there. If you find 2, let me know.

Nightkid,

My best mate has a 1.3 ghia mk 2 sat on his drive, near Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk.

His girlfriend bought it for him, with the intention of converting it into a track car.

But with loads of othr projects on the go, i think he would be interested in selling it.

Is it suitable ?

Cheers

Gary

For everyone’s reference, here is what my local scrap yard (in Basildon, Essex) is charging:

• £125 Engine including (1.6 mk2 escort):
o Carburettor
o Distributor
o Starter & starter motor solenoid
o Alternator
o Water Pump
o Inlet & Exhaust manifolds
• £20 Radiator & Hoses
• £10 Instrument cluster
• £10 Fuel tank sender unit
• £10 Master cylinder for brake system
• £30 Clutch, brake, accelerator pedal assembly including cables
• £35 Gearbox including mounting brackets
• £45 Back axle with brake drums
• £10 Handbrake lever including mounting bracket
• £20 Steering rack including mounting clamps, track rods and swivel joints
• £10 Steering wheel
• £50 - £100 (depending type) Wheels including tyres and wheel nuts
• £10 Windscreen washer system
• £20 Heater and fan unit
• £30 pair Seat belts
• £60 pair (I think, could be each!) Cortina front hub assembly including brakes

This is what the scrap yard guy will throw in for free if I purchase all the part above:

o Flasher unit for signals
o Fuse Box
o Horn and horn relay
o Ignition coil

What I’m still missing:

o Wiring loom
o Brake light switch
o Speedometer cable
o Electric radiator fan
o Wiper motor and blades (from a mini?)
o Thermostat housing and electric fan switch (from a fiesta?)

I might be able to barter the price down but if anyone is interested in getting anything from the list then u2u and I will email you the address of this scrap yard. I don’t necessary need everything in there for example like wipers and wiper motor, I was thinking of just having an aero screen in front. Still everything adds up to a lot of cash! I don’t know what the quality of the parts are like other that the engine is “supposedly” a runner but then you can get a lot of motors to run. The question is how good of a runner is it.

I will keep looking around for an mk2 but end of the day I might be looking this the wrong way. Maybe I should look for a donor car and choose the right chassis for it instead of building a chassis and then look for a donor car to fit. I know I can get any spec of Corpri for £100 from a friend of mine who do banger racing in them so he has lot of them around. Maybe that’s how some Locost builders have done it.

We found our 1.3 Escort in Kent, had to drive 200 miles. Only cost us £50 (plus petrol).

That was 3 years ago, shows how rare they were then.
