K series engine

anyone know if i can fit a k series (prob 1.4) to a type 9?

i have access to a 5-axis milling machine so i could maching an adaptor plate for the bellhousing but the input shaft is the bit im concerned about....

how can i get around this problem, could i try to attach a ford clutch and flywheel to the rover crank?

any other ways?

cheers

Matt

Caterham and Frontline Spridget sell bellhousing to fit a type 9 to a K series. As for clutch I you will need to keep the Rover clutch and fit a suitable Ford friction plate.

You will also need a spigot bearing to support the gearbox input shaft.

I've got a 1.4 K-series and a Type 9... got all the bits to join them up from Fisher Sportscars (when Mark Fisher was still running it). From memory, I got:

Aluminium bellhousing
Spigot bearing
Ford clutch arm
Clutch friction plate
Starter (had to grind away some of the ali webbing on the side of the engine)
+???

It uses the Rover flywheel

The 1.4 & 1.6 K-Series engines need a 18mm hole (ish) in the end of the crank for the spigot bearing, the 1.8 doesn't. But then the 1.8 has a more complex factory ECU to decipher and wire up.

If you know you are going to end up using an aftermarket ECU, don't even bother with a K-Series - get a Ford 1600 Sigma instead - more power, similar costs & similar weight, and still fits under the bonnet with the original plenum.

Having said that, if you really want to go K-series - maybe due to the pre'92 age of a 1.4, I have a Caterham bell, starter & clutch plus an XR4i box available if you want make me an offer??

Andrew

P.S. Caterham use a sunbeam clutch friction plate for some reason!!

Hi, I'm working in the same conversion, but I am using the 1.8 k series.

The main problem seems to be that you need a matching mems ecu, 5as security module and fob. There can be problems matching all of these to the flywheel. But if they are all from the same car there will be no problem.

Because the 1.4 and 1.6 flywheels are smaller than the 1.8, they will fit straight onto the caterham bellhousing.
You will need a ford 190mm friction plate and clutch release bearing.

There is a website somewhere with details of what you grind off to fit the starter motor. But this removes the engine number.

Apart from all that you should be ok. You might need the caterham shallow sump too so you can get the engine nice and low in the chassis. Also you might need the longer input shaft type 9 from the v6 fords.

I might have a caterham bellhousing, ford friction plate and clutch release bearing for sale, because as I have said, I am fitting the 1.8 engine.

Good luck.
