If you get a petrol engine off a cylinder mower you will have a centrifugal clutch which you can couple to one of the rear wheels, saves having a diff and will save on tyre wear. You can have an axle which is coupled to one wheel and the drive wheel sleeved over the top of the axle. If you go for the grasshopper you could make a chassis to take the engine and then bolt on the body.

I bought a go-ped from an autojumble for £12. The whole engine and transmission can be used. It also has a centrifugal clutch.

Dunno if this is still available.
500cc, twist and go, with clocks, only 112miles for £180.

makro sell pressure washers with a 4hp engine (?) same as the honda go kart type, but the whole pressure washer is cheaper than the cost of the engine from most places. might be worth a look?
