FS: My Stuart Taylor
Well, the time has come to put up my Stuart Taylor for sale ~) ... I think (you can tell that I'm not sure!).
It was built by me from a rolling chassis, SVAd and registered in October 2005.
Not too much power, not too little, but just right for lively acceleration and a good turn of speed. All at around 37mpg and £125 road tax (2010) for
an economical, fun car that’s great for spring and summer outings.
Always garaged
Mileage is currently under 9,000 miles. The engine had done about 25,000 beforehand in the donor Rover 25.
Taxed until 30 September 2011
MOT until 9 October 2011
Details:
Chassis and body: Stuart Taylor Motorsport (now manufactured by Aries Motorsport). Bodywork is adequate but not concours.
Engine: Rover K-series 1.4 litre 16v (105 bhp) with Pipercross air filter on standard ECU and immobiliser.
Gearbox: Ford Type 9 (5-speed)
Exhaust: Caterham 4 into 1 manifold connected to a Yamaha R1 carbon fibre covered silencer. No catalytic converter
(not needed for MOT as it’s a Q reg).
Rear axle: Ford Escort Mk 2
Damping: adjustable coilover shock absorbers all round
Radiator: VW Polo Mk 2
Fuel tank: c. 35 litres capacity, range up to c. 300 miles (depending on use of the right hand pedal…)
Wheels: Caterham 13” x 6” Minilite replicas in black with polished rims, with Yokohama A048 185/60/13 tyres.
Windscreen: Caterham heated windscreen, which I think works
Dashboard: Stuart Taylor carbon fibre dash with ETB electronic instruments
Steering wheel: Mountney wheel on custom-made removable boss
Seats: JK Composites
Weather gear: half-hood created from Caterham full hood in custom-made bag; removable half doors; separate side screen windows and alternative
Lexan wind deflector.
Storage: lockable boot box; “glove box” behind driver’s seat; storage nets under dash and in passenger footwell.
Price: £5,750
Contact me by email or U2U for more information or to come and look at the car.

ETA I am not planning to get out of "interesting" cars altogether, so if anyone has or knows of something else that I might be interested
in, e.g. GTM K3 Rossa, Fury, Haldane, MX5 Mk1 with good spec and able to be bought within what I am asking for the ST, or other suggestions, please
contact me as well.

Its a common misconception on this forum that Q plates are visual inspection only. This isn't true unless the car was registered before 1998.
The emissions are set during the SVA / IVA and these go into the MOT database. So no matter what garage you go to, the MOT system tells them what
emissions test to perform on the vehicle. So what the vehicle got tested for in the SVA is what the MOT will test it as.

My SVA certificate does not have any emissions info, IIRC. There is certainly nothing on the V5C, and it has got through at least 2 MOTs with no cat.

I think it looks like a very usable car; almost sensible. This, I suspect, means that it has the potential to provide a higher than average amount of
driving pleasure and satisfaction for a new owner, but the modest 'touring' spec also means that it might not attract as many blokes who
at least perceive that they want something raw and balls-out with lairy 'paint,' high BHP etc.
In 20/20 hindsight something like this car would have suited me far better than the first kit car I bought which was bike engined, ran on 17"
rims, had chromed everything and nitrous. The problem is, for the 'uninitiated' first-time kit buyer I doubt that it will be terribly
appealing. Does this help you to sell? Maybe not, but if I were you I would focus even more on benefits rather than features, for example:
This vehicle is ideal for enthusiastic touring, perhaps a trip to Le Mans - benefiting from a long-range fuel tank, heated screen, weather
protection and useful lockable storage.
This isn't necessarily the case on this website where people may want to know what brake drums you've used or whatever, but for the wider
audience I'd more clearly try to identify what makes your car a better all-round proposition than a banzai road warrior.
Oh, and forget saying that the bodywork is not concours - let people come to view it for themselves and perhaps accept that it may be a bargaining
tool for someone. Likewise, if at all possible, be sure that the screen does heat up and ditch the line that introduces a risk to the buyer.
As one final aside, you may need to consider that at this price point you are also competing with Westfields, which is a far better known brand. In
my view, you may need to swallow a lower asking price.
I have no doubt that whoever does buy it should be very content. Good luck.

Sorry no postcard.
I think the problem is that it is being advertised here.
This site is frequented by people who start out believing they can build a car for £250.
So:
1) they are super cautious with money (careful choice of words)
and
2) they don't want to take the sensible route of buying a pre-built car
Why not list it on PistonHeads or similar?

Thanks for the replies, chaps. I'll see what happens over the Easter weekend - the weather might get a few more people starting to think about
buying a kit car!

To me it's a lot of money for a pre-built car that's not spectacular performance-wise, especially when I (as a frequenter of this site
might be) would quite like to build one. If I wanted a quick hit of pre-built fun an MX5 would be a lot cheaper and a lot less unknown, so probably
the wrong target audience for something that's not "nuts".

Stick it on Piston Heads and a as many other places as possible.
Also change the title of the advert, my first thought was..... 'Who the hell is Staurt Taylor?'
Putmore emphasis on this being a small fun and ECONOMICAL sports car, with the price of fuel these days the 1.4 16v is a real + point. Certainly made
me keep reading.

FS: Stuart Taylor now reduced and also on PH
Thanks again. I have had a go at rewriting it and have put it on Pistonheads here
I've put it on at a slightly lower price on PH and would consider offers OIRO from fellow locostbuilders
ETA - if the price is too high, what would be a reasonable asking price, given that I want to list it with some bargaining room?
Cheers
Simon
