Balde neutral/temp prob
Hi guys,
Got a couple of problems which im thinking might be linked to each other.
The car is in neutral but no neutral light is showing, however the engine starts. The bulb is fine and have checked by putting a good one in its
place.
Also the water temp gauge has stopped working.
Both these problems happened at the same time, and by looking at the wiring the water temp wire runs into the same connector as the neutral switch
wire.
Anyone had a similar issue of know what could solve this?!
The engine is a Fireblade 896cc 1994 carbed model.
Many thanks
Ollie

How about the oil pressure switch? It also uses the same connector in most Fireblabes.
The fact that you haven't mentioned it suggests that you are not using it, so perhaps it is indeed a connector problem. Try testing for a path
to earth through the neutral switch.

Cheers John, i am using an oil pressure switch, and it is in the same connector as the other two. If the switch has failed would it also knock out
both the netural indicator and the water temp gauge?

So, the big question is...... is the oil pressure light lighting? If it is, it would suggest that the connnector itself is OK
In the end these electrical problems are usually fairly easy to solve, as long as you can get access to the various components.
Checking in order is good practice, but sometimes some parts are easier to get at than others, so check the easiest first.
For the neutral light to work there needs to be 12 volts to one side of it. Then the other side needs to be at earth potential when the gearbox is in
neutral. You've already checked the bulb, so now check those other things. You will need a meter, of course.

Nope, its 'normal' neutral!
Looking at it now, i hadnt noticed but the oil pressure light isnt coming on with the igniton, so i will change the pressure switch and see if that
helps.
Are all 3, pressure switch, water temp and neutral all linked in series then? so if one fails all fails? seems a bit daft?

I would suspect a blown fuse. The oil pressure and neutral switches would switch the ground, not the feed.

Also , you may want to check you have a good earth from the battery to the engine?
