welding onto a crank pulley?

is it a baaaaad idea to do it while its still attached to the engine?

I'm not thinking of welding all the way around, but say i was to weld on a trigger wheel, with say 4 welds, about 10mm in length each, would this damage the crank shaft?

my 2p worth - in order to get a decent penetration, I had to cook the pulley with a blow lamp for 10mins before welding. That said, think it's a bad idea anyhow.... if it can go wrong,.....

or how else would you mount a trigger wheel? i know plenty of people have

i appreciate what you say about the balance, but there's no other way to do it

and trigger-wheels.com recommend either welding, or in the case of the RV8, bolting, with only 1 M8 bolt to stop it rotating. the balance has got to be worse on that, surely?

I welded mine to the crank pulley off the car. Where I welded it was about 30mm from any rubber. I heated up the bit I wanted to weld and kept the rubber section of the crank submerged in a pool of water which worked great.

I made a billet alloy pulley , and fitted the trigger wheel with a clamp ring so timing is a simple job of loosening 4 M6 allen screws and rotating the trigger wheel............
That way the trigger wheel runs dead true

Its cuz I is blond , innit

Claire xx

Will weld for food......

I welded one onto my Zetec pulley using my little Clarke Mig - no probs so far.

I did several 1" welds.

drill it in two places opposite each other and then use roll pins.

this is my plan. (NB for crossflow pulley)

or PU it? there is no load on it, unlike the pulley, can't see why that won't work.

thanks people

i had thought about PU before, someone mentioned it coming off, could cause a lot of damage, but that would only happen only if its really badly out of balance. if it was perfectly balanced it would drop straight down wouldn't it? its only if its really out of balance it might go at funny angles.

claire, its a good idea, but well outdide my capabilities and this engine's already too much of a nightmare. i really want someone to just come and do my engine for me but i'll battle on

welding must be the best idea. think i'll take the pulley off too. seems the best idea. it means the engines got to come back out again though
its got to come out anyway i suppose

it can be difficult to get a good weld and a few people have lost a triggerwheel that way - bolting/pinning is the easy option

If your worried about a single bolt affecting the ballance - use 2, 3 or 4 bolts
on an even spacing (to suit your pulley)

what ever you do it should only cost ~£20 or less to get it re-balanced if you really want to

I did something similar (but not very locost)

I welded my first one - lasted about a year then zoomed across the road at 7000rpm one day! It was a pressed steel one and I think they flex at speed and eventually snap next to the welds. The current one is bolted and adjustable!

The Zetec flywheel is on a shelf in the garage!

I used a CVH one as ot is much lighter than a 1.8 Zetec.
