sorning - unregistered

I bought my unfinished project back in november and I have been waiting to receive a reminder letter about the tax on the donor which hasnt arrived.

I decided to check the DVLA database today because id become convinced the car had been "scrapped".

Well good news: it hasnt.

Potentially bad news: its unlicenced, and when I go through the process of sorning the website has some very firm words for me.

If I bite the bullet and sorn now, am i going to have the pigs round tomorrow?

Speak to DVLA its at their discretion I believe, if you argue a good case. Nowt to do with the police though as far as I can see.

OK first the worst they can do is a fine and back tax to when you bought the car
its strange they only send out reminders once the car has been on the system as taxed or sorn recently
this is what will prob happen
you sorn it you get a message come up at end that says something about a difference in dates and that the local dvla office will look into it.
i know this because a while back i got fined for failing to sorn (id forgotten id got the reminder)
so i then thought to myself oh sh*t what about all the other cars ive got that i have never taxed or sorned but are registered in my name
so i looked them all up and there was a few,
i thought fu*k it and sorned them all got the little message at the end and waited and waited nothing so far this was about 6 months ago if anything happens ill go to court and state my case
my advice would be sorn it now at least it wont be racking up back tax
it seems just registering the car does not get the reminders sent
people lie that the car they are selling is sorned
next time i buy an untaxed car regardless of what the seller says i will sorn straight away
a point of note from another source is this
in law once you post a document it is the recipients responsibility therefore you say you sent sorn off in the post dvla cant prove you didnt
hope all this makes sense

by the way you can check any cars taxation status on the direct gov website just have to put in reg no in the right place and it will tell you taxed, sorned or unlicenced

One thing about SORN is, it is not transferable.
If you buy a car that has been SORNed then you must either buy tax or declare SORN.

Just another little way for the DVLA to get more dosh out of the cash cow, sorry, motorist.
