clutch cable fitting

What have i done wrong with fitting the clutch cable to the Type 9 box. The cable seems to be very loose. I thought that one nut should be eiter side of the gearbox casing but the nipple on the cable end is too big to pass through the nut. Or am i missing something.

Sorry the pictures are in my archive.

looks to me like you just need to adjust the nuts to take up the slack?

Two nuts, to allow you to lock it (i.e. nut against nut). It is held in place because of the inner cable tension...

At lest that's how I've done it..

as above, the small one is just a locknut against the big nut and you have plenty off adjustment left in the cable end. Tighten it till there is a small amount of tension in the cable, then see if you can disengage the clutch, you’ll actually feel the pedal suddenly get a little lighter as it passes the biting point. Best to test it with the rear wheels of the ground first once you run the engine.

Thats what ive done but the cable just seems very slack . When i tighten it up it the clutch bites right at the top of the pedal travel. I will take another look tonight. It just seems a bit of a poor fixing.

I've secured mine at the fork by fitting a small bolt through the slot next to the nipple so that it cannot move across and fall out in use. my cable is also supported near the top via an interference fit between a plastic bush on the cable and a mount on the chassis. I will be circliping this in place too.

Might be a poor fixing but it's the same as the Capri, and probably plenty of other cars...

Get another nut and cut a slot in it--

then put it on the other side.

It looks like the plastic "top Hat" that sits in the hole the cable passes through is missing.
That will allow the threaded part of the cable to move about in the hole and feel slack.
