will be using the ecu? or are you going aftermarket (carbs, efi or whatever) as the key is linked to the ECU, not the actual engine. If that makes sense.
If you intend using the std EFI, then yes, it is important. Buy elsewhere, they are cheap enough and plentiful. Or even another ECU with keys, there must be loads on the bay.

1.8 silvertop

the engine is in really good condition and a good price which is why im tempted. I was going to just use the standard efi unit for sva purposes then alter after if i fancy. So i can just purchase a new ecu with keys?

some good info here from Big_wasa on previous thread ECU sure it will have the ford PATS imobiliser where you need the matching keys, if you havent got it, ebay come up with matching sets but can be around £40-£50.

It will not run with out the rdif chip found in the key.

Ecu and keys sell on ebay for around £25 if your patiant.

How do you know its a good motor if it doesnt run ?

great so just need to find another ecu and key.

I paid £25 for the last one, it came with a full lock set.

One before that I got for a quid.

you could have a look in your locall scrapie, the one I use, its rare to find the keys.

You can get the ecu reprogramed for a new key but thats mega bucks unless you have a mate that works for ford.

96 will be eec-v thats the 104 pin version so there is lots of wiring. The eec-v also has obd2 diagnostics so you can see whats going on with a scanner.

I tend to bin the egr system to keep the system as bassic as pos along with the speed sensor input and a few other bits.

Pin numbers on this diagram wont match the pin out I listed above.
