not enough money for a bec, so what do you get?

hi all,
I have just about decided but wondered what others thought. I have no garage so cant build. I have a a budget of 6k. I would love a reliable bec which is impossible for my budget. I want a car mainly for the road but also does well against other se7ens while on track. I will be doing long drives and track days. I want something different to other kit cars and has as low 0-60 as possible and plenty of kit car cred. Dont really want a roof.

Whats your thoughts

hmm yeah you may be right craig. I may of posted something similar. I just have concens with a bec and reliability. I know this has also been discussed to death. Also the difference with 2 people in it compared to 1 is quite alot for my old car. Surely a zx9 would be even worse? And it would be slower than my old car. I suppose i have to expect that if i spend less! Im going to look at a raw striker with a 4age. Ill see how that will compare. It wont be as fast but hopefully the extra torque will make it similar speed. Especially 30 - 80 acceleration. Thanks for your thoughts and putting up with my questions. I just dont know what i want

I can think of at least one ZX9 powered car which is capable of keeping all of the Haybusa powered cars on their toes up this way.

I would have a ZX9 powered car in a minute.

While we're on the subject, the crock of sh*te in my avatar will not owe me £1500 once it's finished.
Yeah, it's taken me forever, but when your finances are stretched, you sometimes have to take as long as it takes.
No fancy bits on it at all, but it's mine. Every single last crappy bit of it.

Now, I'm no psychologist but I think you are struggling with something here. You want a BEC and you are trying to come up with reasons why a CEC would be better. It does sound like you are trying to convince yourself rarther than us.

you maybe right but i dont think so. I think its just a case of me being new to the kit car scene. I need to get out in some more cars i think. Offers in kent area anybody? I would like a go in a 2l zetec and a zx9.

when you say fast do you mean straight line speed or lap times? i am also new to the scene and was obsessed with power and lack of weight. i was correct about the weight but as many will tell you a properly set up car with less power will lap a lot quicker than a poorly set up car with more power. take a look at the australians in the mnr! i think they are called red back motorsport. they raced an R1 powered mnr and destroyed a lot of much higher powered competition.

Upto and beyond the legal limit a BEC will blow away any similarly powered CEC. The Fury linked above will be a quick car and compare favourably with you old car - it just won't be as grunty lower in the rev range but drive it accordingly it will still be great fun. The difference between a ZX9 and Fireblad is neglible. You just need to learn how to drive it correctly withiin the power band of the motor. If you are worried that a fireblade BEC won't be quick enough, you'll be totally underwhelmed by a CEC with the same power. I had a 150hp Xflow Caterham and it was dull, dull, dull compared with a Westy megablade.

Ultimately you either will like or dislike the BEC experience Vs CEC. To choose between them based on "it might be a bit slower two up" is not really a factor. If you want a more leisurely drive relying on a waft of low rev torque then get a CEC. If outright performance in a straight line or on a track, wringing the motor to 11k revs with all the noise that goes with it floats your boat, then get a BEC.

Try both, make a decision. Simples

Maybe you need to decide for yourself what you want? BEC or CEC etc. 6k is a lot of money spend because other people give you their ideas.

Make your own mind up. if you're not sure why not buy an older westfield that'll not loose any cash why you decide?

You say that you want to go on long drives but not have a roof. Do you want to do these drives wearing a helmet or not and with the high revs and noise that goes with a bike engine.
No Helmet=screen and the engine choice speaks for itself.

thats another good point gotto. Anytime i know im going regularly over 30 ill ware a lid. I have no roof but that dont bother me. The high revs were a bit annoying. It sounds like it needs another gear with a bec. I can live with it though. Cec revs are nicer on long drives and i think the lady would prefer lower revs!

If you're doing lots of trackdays then best to check a BEC will past the DB tests. Goodwood and Bedford are a problem for my BEC friends.

For me it's a CEC all day, my BEC driving friends with an equal driving ability were slower on track and autotests. Torque is king.

Ive had a ZX9R in my MK, and I've now have a westfield megablade with blade engine, very similar performance from both engines, if anything it's the ZX9R over the blade, but it's very close.

Cheers
