Why on earth are Malaria nets £5 each?!?
With all the Sport Relief going on at the moment I keep seeing these appeals on TV about how £5 can buy a malaria net. But why on earth are they £5
each, it's just a net, as far as I understand it's not treated with any repellant or anything. And what's more, surely if
you're buying a few hundred thousand at a time you should get some kind of discount??
I don't mind doing my bit for charity but that sounds like they're being ripped off to me?

Perhaps when you consider supply chain & distribution costs to remote areas, training, etc. Cost of the net is only one part of it.........

Well the cheapest mossy net on Ebay is £6 so £5 sounds quite good.
anyway, surely if they actually cost £2.50 they can supply twice as many? It's win / win?!?!?!

The nets do tend to have some form of treatment on them, but it probably doesn't last for long.
If they're anything like the nets you get issued in the army, they can have a wire frame in them so that the net is off your skin - otherwise
the little buggers just stick their beaks through and bite you anyway.

Also, for a fiver, could you make one...
There actually a bloody fine bit of net and that takes some cleverness and cost to make.
Plus as said, supplychain costs to get it there etc.

Just for the record, I should probably make it clear that I don't think "I'm" being ripped off or that I don't believe
they are invaluable in their purpose, just seems a bit expensive that's all?

They are normally impregnated with repellent, so I don't think £5 is too bad at all.

Interesting article on TV a couple of nights ago.
Malarial mossies were eradicated from the UK in the 1950's.
Well... They are BACK!
Another interesting point was ordinary Mossies sit with their bodies parallel to the surface.
The Malarial variety sit with their bodies at 45 degrees to the surface.
This makes it easy to spot / recognise the dangerous ones.
So, make sure you kill any that sit at 45 degrees to the surface in the room before you go to sleep!
Just a bit of interesting info for you all.
In Africa those Nets are provided by the World Health Organisation, and should be given away FREE. Trouble is that unscroupulous types comandeer the
shipments and sell them in those countries instead of giving them away.
So Our donations are being taken, and turned into profit by some people in the destination countries. (Read Corruption is rife in certain
countries)

Call me a cynic but I suspect a typical UK Aid charity cost breakdown
25p for the net
25p for transport & wharehousing.
25p for local distribution costs.
50p for bribes to local officials
50p for brides to local gangsters
75p UK advertising.
50p Staff training
£1.00 for UK staff & admin
£1.00 is spent on junkets ie needless air travel and 5 star Hotels & Restraunts.

Watched that too, iirc the parallel ones are the males the 45 degree ones the females. Only the females carry the malarial parasite.
Though many ascribe to the theory that males and females are different species

45 degrees? If I'm going to get that close with my protractor, I'd twat it with a ruler irrespective of what angle it was sat at. Or stab
