Zetec Turbo

I was running my 2.0L zetec engine last year with a TD04 turbo, but it started to leak oil from between the main body and the exhaust turbine housing (see pic). I took the turbo off and as there was some play in the shaft I rebuilt it over the winter thinking the seals must have gone.

I took the car out for a short run last week and everything was ok, no leak. I took the car out again this evening and there is oil coming out from the same place again!! I have checked the drain pipe to the sump and it is not blocked.

I took the oil feed pipe of the turbo and there was oil was sitting inside at the top of the turbo body not draining away. I tried to blow it through with the compressor, some oil came out the drain pipe but some also came out between the body and the exhaust housing.

Can the oil ways inside the housing become blocked and if so how would I clean them out?

I had an oldMk3 escort with a leaking radiator, and i put an egg in it to stop the leak. can you try this with the turbo??

In all seriousness, the turbo is upside down and the oil return is at the top when it should be at the bottom.

Kindest Regards,
Richard.

On the TD04 you can spin all three sections around, all you have to do is split, when you put back together just have to dill a small hole in aluminium housing to locate a peg. Will solve your problem.

Thats assuming you want to use the internal wastegate.

You can easily clock the compressor housing but rotating the chra is a bit more difficult - unfortunately, thats what you need to do!

Madteg is right, I split the sections and moved the casting round otherwise it would have been pointing at the block. The main housing is the correct way up.
The oil is coming from the joint between the housing and the main body. I replaced all the copper seal when I rebuilt the turbo.
I don’t understand how oil can be escaping from there and not just getting burnt in the exhaust.

Sorry just noticed the pic I attached was from before I turned the housing round.
Well spotted though.

Madteg you were right, the oil was leaking from the banjo copper washer, but was very difficult to see. Thanks for the heads up.

Now all I’ve got to do is retune Megasquirt map as I ported the head and made a new inlet manifold over the winter. When will it end?????

AFAIK it only ends when you sell it, and then a new project fills the newly acquired hole in your life!

Glad to hear its sorted!
