Tin top strange noise - help please
Hi all, I need some advice as my tin top has started making some strange noises. Its an Audi A4 1.9 tdi (non quattro) with 170k miles and when I
have any steering lock on at speed (40 mph plus) I can hear a w-w-w-w-w-w-w-w-w-w-w sort of noise from the front drivers side wheel. Occasionally it
happens with the wheels straight ahead but it is far more pronounced with some steering angle on. I can feel slight vibration thru the steering wheel
and braking makes no difference (apart from slowing the car down!!) It seems to be road speed related.
So any ideas? Hub bearing? CV joint?
Any advice gratefully received

Tyre carcass with a twist on it ?
It really isn't unheard of and would give a rythmic swishing noise.

would a balance weight only affect it with the steering turned though?

Wheel bearing almost certainly. Steering left or right will load and unload the wheel with the duff bearing so you should be able to work out which
side it is.

I'd go with the wheel bearing too, had a similar issue on a fwd cavalier many years ago...

Wot Mike said, deffo wheel bearing. If you put enough lock on at 40 to hear a driveshaft issue, you'd be in the hedge

is a bearing change something i can do or is it a dealer job? special tool? does it need pressing in or anything?

If it's the same kind of bearings I've been refitting in college you could do it yourself, but you'd need a press.. About 4 tons of
pressure iirc.
Then again that's the rings the bearings sit in, the bearing themselves you could replace but it might well be doing half a job. Like replacing
brake pads only when the disc needs changing too.

CV joint tends to be a click-click-click noise when turning slowly at full lock. Bearing gives a more thrumming noise as described.
