SR2 build

hi everyone just signed up thought i would say hi and do a build dairy on my SR2 as you can probably work out from my user name i work for road runner racing so decided i would build myself a SR2
ill be using 1600 mx5 running gear with a full built engine and a rather large turbo previously i have had a big power evo and a 300whp mx5 so getting good power from the engine shouldnt be a problem

not had alot of time on it so far the parts are piling up but with only the odd 10mins between building customers chassis and getting kits ready i have only had chance to get the master cylinders and brake lines on

gone for remote resevoirs as i already had them lying around from another project

set to mocking up were i want the turbo to go so i can build the manifold

test fitted to one of out full built cars to check clearence

looking good

Although...

That bracket for the brake fluid etc it’s going to flex and vibrate the way its mounted and then fatigue at the rivets, then fall off. You’ll need a much stronger mounting method and I’d make it from steel. I’ve had driving lamps fatigue 2 inch perfectly round holes in 3mm aluminium sheet purely from vibration.

Fame is when your old car is plastered all over the internet

i think possibly driving lamps are heavier than the res pots personally i think it will be fine its got more than enough rivets securing it and it doesnt span a great distance so there will be very little leverage

Looking forward to seeing this build. If i were to build another car i would go the full Mazda Mx5 Route. Out of interest, why did you choose the 1.6 over the 1.8?

I agree, Welderman and me were at the show and were impressed by that chassis. The body is a very nice fit too.

I had a good chat with you about the SR2 and have just put my Caterham up for sale with the intention of getting an SR2 to build.

Hi
Good looking Turbo, What BHP will you get from that and what pistons and rods have you put in.
Can a Turbo be put on a standard engine and what BHP would I get without damaging the engine ?

Yes a turbo can be put on a standard engine. The older engines in the Mk1 run slightly lower compression as standard than the engines in Mk2, so mapping will be slightly different. Should be able to get to around 200bhp without any problems

its a gt2876r ball bearing its good for around 450-500bhp im hoping i should at 2 bar of boost for around 400whp
ill be fitting weisco pistons and carillio i beam rods

the standard engines are fairly strong i have personally had 250whp on a standard bottom end at about a bar of boost

we are as a company planning on offering a turbo conversion in the near future just finalising a few things and some testing

And, err, what does the chassis weigh Lee?

To be fair, Chris has only just this week told me what his weighs, so I could pass it on to Tim and I forgot it, before I'd even put the phone down!!!

I suppose I could just ask him again!
