BEC reverse set up ??
Hi guys i'm looking into putting a reverse gear set up on my MK Gsxr using the starter motor setup and toothed gear on the propshaft, ive been
onto MK and they do a kit for £350 inc vat supplied only plus fitting if required etc...
Now i was wondering basically whats involved in fitting this, so ive a few questions if anyone can help me please
Q1, mk stated its a modified starter motor that when cranked turns backwards instead of forward (can you just not mount starter other way round ??)
Q2, where is the starter mounted in relation to the car, (i'm struggling to see where it can fit at all space wise)
Q3, Has anyone got any fitting pictures of location and mounting and stuff they can email me please...

The sprocket is fitted between the diff and propshaft with the starter mounted either on top or below the prop. Have a word with AB performance, i
haven't seen one but he says he has a reduction gearbox fitted to the motor and they are cheaper than MK's.

Q1: It's a VAG starter, they run backwards as standard.

40 inches,, where did you get the drive sprocket for the propshaft made or did you buy the whole kit...

HPC gears in Chesterfield linky thingy. Here's
copy of order if you are using Sierra diff.

i'm up in durham just been looking at the pictures of yours and the you tube video,
What starter motor did you use ? vag but off what car etc...
then i assume you made the brackets to mount it etc..
what car is your fitted too please..

Been in touch with HPC and they can supply the gear like yours for the propshaft for £121 all in...
So i think i will order one of those, The VAG starter what model is it of golf/polo etc etc..

Last question 40inches 
What way did you wire it in for a curcuit via relay etc etc do you have to press any switch first ie like a safety device etc..

I have 2 batteries, a bike battery and the smallest 330ca car battery I could find,this is in the passenger foot well, with a full ally
bulkhead/footrest, a split charge relay takes care of charging.
The live feed from the car battery goes through a 150amp continuous mega fuse to the motor.
Another smaller live goes through a relay switched by a feed from the ignition switch, then through another relay switched by the neutral switch ( you
still awake? ) then through a small lever switch (that is, it will when I have made it) then on to the starter solenoid.
I am still toying with the idea of switching the solenoid with a switch on the clutch pedal, leaving both hands free and making an easy clutch to
brake pedal movement as a go/stop system. I think it would be more natural that way

Spur gear has arrived 
Had to drill the 4 holes for the diff bolts but its defo nice quality manifacturing..
Couple of questions again though if you dont mind please..
Q1, did you have to space out inner trim panels any ?
Q2, Did you have to use longer propshaft securing bolts min will only be as far in as the back of the flange no threads poking through etc..
Q3, Did you put a support on the rear of the starter motor as well..

Q1, Yes, mark on panel the spur gear location, then tap out a bulge 25mm longer and wider to clear the gear (cut a slot in a piece of 18mm MDF to use
as a former)
Q2, Yes, 30mm long Alan head from fleabay, about £5 each  Got to be cheaper somewhere else!!!!
Q3, No, but possible.

Neo2 do you have the mounts already on the chassis for the starter? Mine came with the mounts fitted for the MK reverse setup but £350 is a bit too
much for me. Do MK use the same VW starters?

No mate mine was'nt there so i did the the same as 40inches in fact i copied his specs 100% hope they wernt copy righted lol...
Save a lot of work like if they are already there, aligning and setting up and welding has been a bit of a mission to be honest as my car is fully
built up..
Brackets done and welded in now though..

Neo, when you fit the motor you need 6thou of back lash. I cut off a 3thou feeler gauge from a set, shaped it around one tooth on the spur gear,
placed it on a gear tooth on the starter motor (you need to extend the gear and lock it in the extended position with a cable tie) then adjust it on
the bracket until it is tight, turn the spur gear until the feeler drops out. Done
I should say that the pressure angle on the spur and motor gear are different, the VAG gear is none standard  bar stewards but, because of
the low running time in reverse I was advised by HRP that it wouldn't be worth having a spur made to match, £240, it will be a bit noisy
that's all

Davegtst, in my photo archive you will find a drawing of the VAG starter motor, check it against the brackets on your MK, I could make it fit
The starter and spur gear shouldn't cost more than £200

other brackets made up and welded on.

'Fraid so, £120+p&p+vat makes your eyes water! I tried,but couldn't find anyone else who made them any cheaper.
If you had a lathe, the gear blank is around £60 I think.
