Is There Something Wrong With My MX-5 Engine... :(

I've had a 7k miles 2008 MX5 1.8 engine (Duratec with VVT) and 5-speed box (by all accounts a cracking unit) up for sale for quite some time without any interest whatsoever.

I'm seeing folk buying high-mileage ancient Duratecs and old Type-9's for only a few hundred less... what's putting folk off?

Is it the VVT??? One of the cheaper aftermarket ECU's will control it no problem. Is it the price??? I paid £1k for it... got to be worth £900 all day long (can't find a cheaper engine box combination for sale anywhere).

Any thoughts appreciated as I need to get it shifted (but won't be giving it away!).

I got my 2.0 ST150 Duratec for £275.00 with 22k miles off a 2007 car.

You can also buy MX 5 gearboxes for £100-£150.00 so maybe its the price.

Got to agree though cracking setup.

Duratec Engine is fitted, MS2 Extra V3 is assembled and tested, engine running, car now built. IVA passed 26/02/2016

Quite simply its the second worst time of the year to sell such items...the other is xmas.
Normal plebs have holidays to pay for and spending money..new clothes for the trip ect.
Sick it on the mx forum and it will go.
Problem is we dont have enough scootz in the world

I would be interested but as Pat says wrong timing. What ecu would control it.

I'm tempted, but I think the price is a wee bit optimistic.

It's not new enough to warrant a "new" price. It's not old / cheap enough for someone to take a risk on.

It's in that grey area between new and old.

I'm very tempted though Scott, take some better photos, send me the dimensions so I can check it'll fit in the Indy and I'll try to resist.......

You can, but they won't be the most recent one, or bolt up to the MZR (Duratec engine)...

seriously I'd love an engine like that (and your V8) but I don't have a project for one (I know this has never stopped you before )

I could stick it in the dax, but then what would I do with my (very expencive) pinto & type 9 ?

The price is right Scott, boxes usually sell for £400-£500 for the 5 speed and a little more for the 6 speed version. And the engine is low enough mileage too. Only downside is it being a 1.8 as they are not very tunable due to most bits not fitting from the 2.0/2.3 (pistons, rods etc)

Have you advertised it anywhere else? Try turbosport maybe? Would be a good engine in a mk2 escort for a daily driver!

that would be a very expencive anchor

I think might have admited to scootz how much I spent on it - but only because he spent slightly more on his V8 at the same engine builders......

If it's any consolation, if you were nearer I'd have had the engine off you for a future, yet to exist project...

It's a great package, but just too steep for me at the moment.

I know I'll probably end up spending more in the long run, but it'll be spread out over a gentler payment profile.
