Crossflow Noise

So, after I spun a bearing due to an oil pump failure a few weeks ago, spent the weekend building up a new engine.

I started it up, and rattle rattle rattle. Sounds like very very loud tappet noise.

Its a 'new' engine, ie, rebored, new bearings etc, assembled by Jem Engines so i'm fairly sure the bottom end is good.

The only other thing that is not tried and tested is the sump, I know 1300 sumps make a racket, I measured the depth of the new one, and it seems to be the same as the one that came out.

Compression is normal, tappets don't need adjusted, cam timing is ok, I can't feel anything clashing when i turn it over by hand.

What else could it be? I'm totally stumped (And gutted.)

Are you sure you dont have a rocker which is stiff on the shaft and giving a false reading?

Have you checked the cam chain for slopping around?

1300 sumps are narrower than 1600 sumps - are the rods hitting the sides ?

I once got a nicely modded sump on a 1300 bottom end I picked up , couldnt resist fitting it to my 1700..................sounded like a bag of spanners on startup

I rebuilt a 1600 and had a similar problem, It turned out to be a little end bearing. Some sh1t had managed to block the oil passage to that piston and wrecked the bearing.

Probably the same way I found out

I spent all day getting the engine in , plumbed , filled with fluids , then had it up on stands changing the fresh sump..............in the dark

Also, even with the right sump, if you dimple the flat shallow part of it enough it will rattle like mad - then you have to push or pull it out.

You didn't support the engine with a trolley jack did you?

Took the sump off, couldnt see any marks from it being twatted, spent an eternity measuring it against the one that came off, exactly the same size in the bits that matter.

Lots of head scratching...

Later whilst rotating the engine by hand I noticed that the con rod bolt was grazing the oil pick up pipe ever so slightly. Took the pipe off, bent it out a little. Job done.

PHEW!!!!!!!!!
