I've often wondered about this, is the overall cost lower if you start at one price but have aq reserve that is higher than that? Reason I ask
is I don't understand why a person wouldn't just start it at their lowest price, doesn't it amount to the same thing?
As some day it may happen that a victim must be found,
I've got a little list-- I've got a little list
Of society offenders who might well be underground,
And who never would be missed-- who never would be missed!

If it's too close to the 'right' value as a starting price you often don't get any bids, or just one or two seconds from the
close of the auction.
If you start low then you, hopefully, get 2 or 3 people bidding for a bargain, often they get so into the 'must beat the other bloke'
mindset they forget the point at which it's not a bargain any more (and why sometimes used stuff goes for more than the new price from a shop).
The reserve stops you losing it for pennies if you don't attract a bidding war.

Ah ha, so its all cycle-logical then!

The looks I got towing my 5' x 3' trailer full of rubbish into the tip with the Robin Hood were priceless
