Poll: 50" Plasma?
I really fancy a new telly..
a Panasonic 50"
3D Viera
I've been living with a 42" Viera now since 2002 and its been faultless, however, its starting to look dated and not as sleek as the new
ones.. I paid an eye watering amount of cash for it back then and the latest lot look very cheap in comparison.
The Panasonic VIERA TXP50VT20B comes with a Blu-ray player and 4 titles...
Any reason why I shouldn't?

Although I just clicked buy it, 3D on TVs doesn't impress me much so if it was me I'd just get the V20.

Don't forget the couple of hundred quid a pair, for the 3D glasses, that everyone who is going to watch it in 3D will need.
Tell them about the bent treacle edges!

I just voted no way because IMO if you're thinking about changing your telly for any other reason bar "it's broken" then you
aren't spending enough time considering what upgrades you could make to your car
If you've got enough money to upgrade the tv and the car then carry on!

Best? Nah - at 9' on a 32" you'd barely notice the difference between SD and 720p, let alone 1080p. 50" would be about right
even closer than 9' for 1080p.

Personally no, our 32" is big enough and 42" would be more than enough for us. However I've seen that 3d thing on one of them Sky
stalls and it IS that good.
If you've got your heart set on the 3d thing now then I suppose go for it, but IMO if there isn't much you'd bother with then it
might not be worth it yet.

I'd argue that you're wrong. I do this sort of stuff for a living Also i'd hang on before going 3D as we're still 50/50
whether its going to take off or not, even with the investment.

Im in the same boat as you's all,,. spent a 1K on a 32 panasonic put it on the morgage 5 year's ago when i moved house! NOW thinking
bigger better , you can get a lot of tv for the money now, but dont know what to go for.

I have just got the 50" G20
A superb TV but would have preferred the V20
The VT20 3D model is not worth the money as there is very little 3D material out there at the moment and also the 3D stuff I have seen is not that
impressive.
But the choice is yours !

Plasma TV's can be awful dirty things.
They can radiate signals and can cause interference to other users of the radio spectrum who reside close by.
Personally I would bite the bullet and buy a LED TV.
Better picture and less interference is radiated.
Donwside is LED is more expensive.
IMHO Plasma TV's rate second only to PLT LAN extenders (Computer LAN / network over the Mains wiring)
Both these devices are under investigaton by Ofcomm who regulate the Radio Spectrum in the UK.
They pollute the airwaves with their interference.
Not many on LCB are interested in the Radio Spectrum, or are Radio Hams, but those who are will understand what I going am on about.
Sorry.. but this is my view, and I am not alone with it.

Panasonic size guide:
23-32 Inch Screen - 2.4 - 3 metres Viewing distance Range
36-42 Inch Screen - 3 - 3.6 metres Viewing distance Range
43-60 Inch Screen - 3.6 metres+ Viewing distance Range
You have to remember that 50" has no more resolution/quality as a similar specd smaller screen (ie 1080 pixels), so if you are quite close, you
wont gain much.

I say yes, the Panasonic is a great telly, but don't expect much from VieraCast, it's not a patch on some other implementations (e.g.
samsung).

Only you can decide if you should afford it. Personally I will wait for the 3D technology to mature or fade again and for more media to be available.
Your original post reads like the external design is dated so you want to change but I guess you also mean the picture quality too. You do appear to
have got a lot of use from your TV though as I tend to change mine more often that that. Power usage might also be considerally better on the latest
designs.
I've currently got a 50" plasma and it's going to need a big step in quality or features for me to justify another upgrade soon. For
the record I sit about 3m from mine and I'm happy with that.

dont buy it as the new 3d will be out very soon and you wont need to were glasses ,also i found i could see the flicker on the tv all the time think
its 100 hertz or somthing (but i see the floresent tube bulbs pulsing )also i dont think evryone can see this on the tv but it really anoyed me.
i have a lg 60" and is not great as normal tv has 720 pixels × 480 lines so the biger the set the poorer the pic if you watch an old 14"
portable the pic will be as good as a or better than a 6o" 720p hd pic.

i wouldn't bother, i got an absolute bargain last month on a new 50" plasma, ignored 3d as its still early days and much better systems
will come along soon (if it lasts) they already do smaller screens that don't need any glasses, working on the larger ones.
i picked up a LG 50pk590 for £630, great tv and seen it going for upto £1k in other places
as for distances, thx recommended for 50" is closer than that, to see the difference in 1080i and for it to be fully immersive was something
like 7ft maximum viewing distance
we were worried about the size but after a few hours it became normal and i think we could get away with a larger one if wanted (not that we want
it)

65" = 6.5 ft viewing distance,
50" = 5ft
(divide screen size by .84, basicly screen size /10 = distance in feet)

You can see the difference between sd/hd at anything from 2ft to 15ft on any size screen. As above though its still early days for 3D and the current
range of TV's effectively display the 3D picture in an SD format.
Give it another 3 years or so to see if it does take off and once display/transmission standards have been set.
