Fiat 126 - Locost Axle

The little Fiat project has been ongoing for just over a year now, it has moved from a few ideas I had to a bespoke full spaceframe car with a Fiat 126 shell. The rear axle was for me a stumbling block, I had looked at Powertec/Quaife axles but the £3500 cost was not an option. I had a Quaife chain drive axle in my garage, but the tiny wheelbase of the car & meaty engine combination , would have left a very short chain with a lot to deal with. The guys were throwing various ideas about and came up with this option to drive the wheels , small cake for the observant reader who can I ID what it is ??

Still lots to do, bit of a lull in the build until early next year.

More pictures to follow, the chassis is now rolling.

I refer to my earlier answer to MikeR - You too Scott have had inside information, and technically are barred from the competition.

You will find the viscous will probably be too stiff, but its a separate unit inside, my dad can rebuild it and make it looser

Whatever guys. A brilliant bit of lateral thinking gone on there. Well done!!

I'm sure this won't be the last of these we see now. Keep us posted on the progress please.

Just one Q. Why did you have to get the input shaft made. Why not use an original one cut and welded? Too short??

The brilliant thinking comes from Nat & Cal , I joined them and drank tea...they thought , while i supped tea.

Anyway its looking like the vc might be needing an overhaul ie its now solid, so yes I am interested in costing an overhaul please ?? pm me.

We cannot see why it wont work, but nothing ventured nothing gained. Yes we will keep the progress updated.

I bought the matching RR gearbox for the mainshaft quite a while ago, however we discovered the splines were soft and prone to wear.

After some tremendous digging in the West Mids area Nat/Cal found a guy happy to make a one off shaft. We may end up having a one piece shaft made at some point, but its early days and the experiment isnt complete yet.

PS Thats no reverse at the minute, watch this space its not finished yet !

We shall see..

They are stiff when working correctly (in a LR anyway), not like a sierra viscous LSD which are fairly loose in comparison.

PM sent
