the red and green is normally something to do with the atmosphere, refration of the white light or something? twinkling, in other words

or an aeroplane its cloudy here anyhow

The only star I can think of that's red is Betelgeuse, which is on (as you look at it), Orion's left shoulder.

Most stars are blinking this evening due I suspect to atmospheric conds.

Did you know, our sun is 750,000 miles in diameter, but Betelgeuse is 500,0000,000

Of course, as you're near Gatwick, I suspect it's plane lights you can see

yeah I can see the one you mean from here, just an ordinary star but it is changing colour a lot more than normal. Like Blake said its just turbulance in the atmosphere causing it. It's not a planet, they don't shimmer very much as they are not point sources like the stars so are not effected the same way.

I'm really glad that someone has mentioned this...I thought my eyes had suddenly gone really bad.....

I also thought at first it was a plane...but it is not, it's in the same place.....for the last few nights (cloud before then so not sure how long) .... I first noticed it when I was looking at the 'Super' moon the other night.........

I think Blakes 'atmospheric' reply sounds the most likely......

Glad that I haven't (quite) lost the plot! ...thanks Steve! .....

If the upper atmosphere is disturbed presumably it will act like a prism hence the colours

(actually I've no idea but it sounds plausible)

if you have a smartphone use google skymap, one of the most impressive app I have used EVER. You point it at the sky and it senses the orientation of the phone and shows you what you're looking at on the screen.

Google skymap is excellent, but totally eclipsed (see what I did there ? ) by "Star chart" you're meant to pay for it but it's available in the usual places..

It's twinkling very bright and multi-coloured again tonight! ......Jasper I have looked at the Philips Planisphere and i cannot see anything that corresponds with it either ....

If my weather vane is sighted correctly, the 'star' is south south west ........

Right.....I have had another look, and with Planisphere in hand ......I have decided that it is either Pollux or Procyon .....

edit to add ...... we have both decided it is Procyon...
