Refurbing chrome alloys

I have just got hold of a set of chrome alloys for my van. They have some minor kerb damage which i will sort but the wheels are generally in good condition.
The clear laquer has bubbled on most of the wheels and i would like to remove and repaint this. How do i remove the laquer without scratching the chrome.?
Is there an acid i should use or will paint stripper do the job?

Are they actually chromed, or are they polished and lacquered?

I'm not au fait with chrome wheels, but I wouldn't have thought they'd be lacquered

They are mazda rx8 wheels and do look like they have been chromed. I have just looked at them a bit more and it appears that the chrome is lifting off with the laquer.

You may find that it's a special paint finish with a lacquer. I fear that a simple repair will be impossible.

The best answer is to live with it or bite the bullet and take them to your local shotblaster/powder coater and choose the finish that you prefer. Should not be very expensive.

I am told that car alloys may not be designed to take the load of a fully laden van.
