Info on a Diesel engine in a vw campervan ?

Does anyone on here have any knowledge of fitting Diesel engines in to VW campervans.
I am a strong believer in "anything is possible" and recently completed a rover V8 in to a 944 after making a bellhouse adapter.
A mate of mine has a campervan (bloody pile of crap , if you ask me) and does a lot of miles in it and would like to convert it if possible to a diesel.
There is plenty of space in there and understand the reasons for doing this (plus it will be a cash job so money in the pot for the kit car). Quite fancy the challenge, what do you think ?

Have you had a look on the VW forums? Bound to be someone out there who's done it before.

Don't Subaru do a flat 4 diesel motor, could be worth a look.

Some discussion and photos here....

There are plenty of 1.9TDI (non PD) engines in T25 campers.

What vintage of camper are you talking about?

A colleague of mine has fitted an Izuzu engine from a diesel Cavalier. Had to buy some bits for the gearbox but he says it's quite a common conversion.

I take it it is a type 1/2/3

The T3 came with the 1600cc diesel which is what the TDI engines were based on so it should be possible.

Bound to have been done before, what engine does he want to use?

yep, my old mot tester did it in his so him and his wife could tour round europe in it. (it previously had an RV* in it) sadly he's retired but i'm sure he said it was a fairly well known VW mod, think he used a gold diesel?

its a 72 devon bus and he said about using the PD 130 TDI engine. Now i have had a few suggestions from you lot I feel a little more confident, what ever he fits its still going to be super slow. I like the concept but could not justify the money he has spent on his over the years. He looks at my kit all stary eyed and says "i wish I could afford one of them" and I tell him you could have brought 10 at the original price for his van.
looking forward to the challenge.

Can be done but will kill the gearbox, it it was me I would go down the ej20 subarea engine it's still going to do 10mpg more than it's stock 1600 and it won't kill the box after 10 mins
