Pinto set up
Hi Guy's I know this has been covered before but not really got the answer.
I rebuilt my Pinto 2.0L over the winter and fitted a new standard cam shaft, followers and springs. I set up
the crank to TDC the cam sproket so the pointer hit the dot and the rotor arm pointed at no 1 on the
dizzy.
The pinto started first time but I am experiencing a "TAK TAK" noise which sounds to be at the front end
under the cam cover. I have checked and re-checked the valve clearances these are OK.
I do have trouble when trying to set the timing using a strobe that the timining marks do not appear stationary
the fluctuate..... the vacuum advance is disconected
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The follower retaining springs fit to ears on the adjustment posts, if these are pointing the wrong way then it will clack so have a look here, easy
to miss.
25 years since I had one so cannot tell you the right way around.
With a new cam it will be very quiet even with the timing all over the place, suggest you treat as different faults. Dizzy may just need a strip and
clean, sticky weights or loose springs.
While running top off you can push a feeler gauge under each lobe to find the noisy one, valves will not hit just watch the flicking oil  , also make
sure each lobe is being sprayed.

And check the cam isn't catching the spray bar. Should be OK with a standard cam but some higher lift ones get close.

Having done further investigation, I have found where the problem is but not
sure what to do.
The TAK TAK noise disappears if i pull off No.1 plug lead. I have tried all the others
and it is still there, swapped leads and plugs and the only thing that works is to
pull off No1 lead.
Any suggestions/help appreciated

Try changing the HT lead and make sure that the spark plug is tight Also check the exhaust manifold isn't leaking
