You can only tax it from the 1st of April - you can pay for it a week beforehand if you so wish and have an MOT and Insurance obviously!

Beaware One problem doing it online is the first day of Insurance cover or renewal date has to be before the date the tax starts, ie you can't have both start at 1 minute past midnight on the first of the month.

I have just taxed two cars today for tax to start April 1st. On the renewal it said "Do not apply before 5th March 2012".
Both cars were already taxed if that makes a difference.

I guess it will probably go up in the budget

If the car is on SORN it can be taxed online BUT it will start from the 1st of the month in which you apply.

If the car is on SORN and you tax it at a Post office you can tax it to start on the 1st of the next month BUT only on the last day of the month.

So can you drive the car for an MOT while untaxed ?

Mine is untaxed (SORN), but is insured at the moment. I will need an MOT though.

Yes, as long as it's a pre-booked MOT, no problem.
