Wheel Stud Length, and best way to remove

Hi All,

Q1.
Does anyone know the number of threads that a wheel nut should do up? (according to an IVA inspector)

On the front I have Cortina hubs with 30mm studs (protrude 20mm) and the nuts go on 4.5 threads.

On the rear I have Sierra drums with 40mm studs (protrude 30mm) and the nuts go on 7 threads.

The threads are 12 x 1.5, and the nuts have at least 26mm of thread in them.

Q2.
As I guess I must replace at least the fronts, what's the best way to get the old ones out?

Hydraulic press and push them out the back; or grind the heads off and pull them out with a nut?
Or is there another way?

Many thanks,
Paul G

When you say go on 4 threads? do you mean 4 threads exposed from the face of the stud/nut? or are they seal nuts so you cant see the end of the thread. If you cant see them then the Inspector wont. If you can see them then you want about 2 threads clear past the outer face of the nut.

The nuts I have are tapped blind, i.e. closed end.

If I put a nut on I can turn it 4 times before it's finger tight. Another half a turn and it's tight.

The top nut in the pic is about where it would be if the wheel was on.

I replaced both the Sierra rears and Cortina fronts with 50mm long studs. I found that alloy wheels have quite thick castings and to be safe needed longer studs.

They just bash out with a hammer I did mind in the vice and the new one's bash in and then seat as you tighten up the nuts.

Heres a pic of all three types

How many turns can you get the nut on to the the stud before reaching the end when the wheel is not in place?

They look way too short. You have to put a wheel on too to work out the stud lengths.

I passed SVA with closed nuts okay. I got some longer studs and fitted the wheel with open nuts measured where I had to cut them down so that there was 3 threads showing

Measure the depth of the closed this should be deeper than the open nut plus 3 threads.

To remove the studs I put the disk on a wooden bench studs up then put an old wheel nut on the stud screwed down but with no threads showing through and then used a large hammer to bash the face of the nut. This avoids damaging the disk or the stud. To put new suds in use spacer washers and use the nut to pull through.

To replace mine if they are still on the car? I just screwed on a old wheel nut and gave it a tap with a mallet and they came out the back no probs, to put n in I used the same old wheel nut with a space and tightened up to pull them in to the grooves all done,

But that's my way may not be the wright way bit worked out ok,

Thanks Sean

Rule of thumb says you should have at least the diameter of the stud engaged in the nut, so for a 12*1.5 stud you need a minimum of 8 turns.

Don't know if IVA is the same as SVA, but when I had my test the tester had me remove a couple of wheel nuts to check they had enough thread, I was OK as had ten complete turns on all wheels. If it was me I would replace them anyway four and a half threads sounds a bit on the small side, just for safety sake. Ebay is a good place to pick up the correct length studs, loads on there. 4 turns doesn't sound safe to me, forget IVA, do you REALLY want to drive around knowing that your wheels are barely held on?

Hi again,

With Davie saying 8 turns minimum, and Chippy saying 10 turns passes I'll go for 47mm long ones off eBay.
A set of 16 @ £1.20 each or thereabouts.

Thanks Big Wasa for the b j splitter idea. I haven't got one but it got me thinking of G clamps.

A bit of 25 box over the head, screw on the nut, socket over the nut and screw.
Came out a treat.

Thanks for ALL the replies, now off to eBay.

You have already brought them now but for future reference Ford sell them for about £1.20 each. You can gaurentee the quality then, unlike ebay sellers.

It's the old old story.

When I was slack, I didn't have the money.
When I'm snowed under, I don't have the time.

I took it for a spin round the garden at the weekend. It's given me a kick up the bum.

And yes. Always up for a pint Mel.

Cheers,
