Calling all bike carbs! Guinea pigs wanted!

Chaps,

For the last couple of months we at M-Tech have been developing this:

Its still in the beta stage, and is completly designed by us, it uses a Microchip Processor, and our own code, to essentially give you a stand alone, 3D mappable ignition controller, with in-built bosch coil drivers, and ability to read 36-1 or 60-2 trigger wheels directly. You can even map it without a laptop, using the 2 push buttons to increase/decrease current advance, and program in your offset angle as well as TPS calibration (so you dont need to run it fixed at 90* like megajolt, which also means no need to source an EDIS module...)

You can use either TPS or optional inbuilt MAP sensor for load sensing, and it yeilds a 16x16 ignition table, which we have bench tested up to 14,000rpm.

It has a few other tricks up its sleeve like a bluetooth module which means you can map it with an android mobile phone app I am currently working on.

We are after some Beta testers, we will shortly have 3 units for the kit car market assigned, and in exchange for testing and feedback, you will be able to bring the car down to us so we can dyno it and map the igniton for you, or go it alone and try it yourselves...

Theres not much wiring to do...
2 wires for the crank sensor
2 wires for the ignition coil pack triggers
A power, and a ground...

Also, tell us what engine you are runnng and I will compile a rough basemap to get you up and running...

Perfect for those wanting to run carbs on a Zetec or XE, without having to hunt out an EDIS module, or all of the extra wiring that comes with EDIS.

Retail price is not yet decided, but I am working on a host of extra features (coolant based RPM limit, air temp advance correction etc is already underway as the sensor inputs are already there on the main plug..) It also has programmable shift light and auxillary outputs, and hardcut and soft cut limiters....

Obviously the finished product is cased, and heat sunk.... any thoughts as to features you think could be good?

Thanks in advance, Matt

Cheers Mike, got it. Have a read through, but certainly sounds like the sort of test bed we are after!

It was more aimed to stop people hard revving the engine below say 60*C. But yes, you could connect it up to an oil temperature sender instead... Generally if the coolant is at 80+ degs, then you can sssume the oil also to be warm. Good idea though...

On a side note, my carb tuning chap here is ex-bikes, so we an also fully tune your carbs at the same time as mapping the ignition, as its quite a common conversion starting to come through the door now...

lol never had an issue dealing with locosters, just those select few who literally want something for nothing, which although is in the spirit of true DIY, some people expect the world!

Plus, this product caters to those who want to get modern engines that lack a dizzy, running well, or for those who simply want to upgrade to bike carbs, or webers etc...

Thanks for all the feedback and messages people.

Give us a couple of weeks to finalise casing, heatsinking and real world testing and we can begin to roll out for beta testing...

More updates to follow!

Just a little update for you all, the 'NODIZ' has covered just over 500 miles on our MX5 for testing, so far, great results!

Lots of features added like coolant and intake temp based corrections, to back off timing when the engine gets overly hot etc to help reduce knocking and so on, as well as launch control and a few other nifty items...

Even made an extra 4bhp on the rolling road with a bit of mapping, though the Mazda was pretty well setup from factory..

Anyway, here is the final system, using more modern SMT coil drivers, and some headers for mounting future daughtercards such as data loggers, 5th injector drivers, launch control and nitrous/fan controllers and so on..

Also in development (as this unit supports blue-tooth already) is an app for android that allows you to tune and monitor the system from your mobile too

If there's anything anyone would like to see as a feature then please let me know as I can integrate it at this stage before we set off on a production run. Of course software mods I can do all the way up to dispatch, so if there's any nifty tricks yo would like to see, let me know!

Thanks all,
Matt

Graham,

This is no way for definite but we are hoping to do an intro deal of matching a megajolt, so around £110/unit +VAT. Of course with our system you wont need to stump up the additional £30 for an EDIS module, so its more affordable there straight away, and it is such an easy task to wire, and with preloaded basemaps its just plug and play.

Pre-made looms to customer lengths (so that's a crank sensor plug, and coil pack plug and power and ground plug, all ready to click on and drive), will be somewhere around the £45 mark.

Standard retail for the NODIZ would probably be around the £180 mark, though as I said prices are not confirmed until we have full costings in place...

The base-map I had on it for testing on my Mazda was a Zetec map I made up from memory (I map loads of them each week on our V4 etc ECU) and it ran perfect out of the box, making 2 bhp more than factory. After an hour of tweaking I got the torque up a bit and finished with a couple more horsepower but if you had driven the MX5 before and after you would of felt no difference at all, which although seems hardly worth shouting about, even with the first guessed basemap, it shows how simple it will be for the everyday chap to get his Zetec/XE etc on carbs up and running in no time so VERY promising so far!

If you join our main page on facebook I'll be sure to give regular updates on there so you can see what is going on, and final pricing etc...

Cheers,
Matt

Mike,

Good man. I have some more testing to do, a user manual to write, and then some more testing, but I am hoping to have an initial batch on their way in the next few weeks.

The tuning front end is coming along nicely, though I have written it in .NET so it needs a decent laptop to run smootly, however, I envision most would order a unit for 'x' type of engine and I can load a basemap from our libraries, and if people want to add/remove a bit of overal advance they can do using the adjuster buttons on the unit, and for the really adventurous they can have a copy of the tuning software off me and have a fiddle..

Heres a pic, lots of dev sections on there that wouldnt usually be seen by the end user..

Steve,

This version is four cylinder only, however I will be developing 6 and 8 Cylinder versions as soon as this one has been released. (The code I have written already supports it, but the hardware only has two coil drivers. A daughtercard module will be made with the extra drivers so it wont be a long wait for the system) One of our mechanics actually asked himself this, and came back with the answer 'run two NODIZ units loaded with the same map, with 2 crank sensors 180* apart reading off the same trigger wheel'. It would work, but was more of an off-the-cuff solution or him to use on his Barracuda, rather than a ratified solution!

Matt

Looking and sounding good Matt.

Is the system TPS only or can it take a MAP input too? Just wondering about our carb'd XR2 Turbo.....

Dan,

Yes it does have privison for MAP based load, and there can be a MAP sensor added for around £13. I have made a space for it on the undersie of the PCB, and also featured its use in the software, so you are well catered for

Sounds good - we're planning to turbo a set of CBR600 carbs on the XR2 and at the same time upgrade the ignition management (currently a crude saab turbo vacuum module on the dissy) and your unit appears to be ideal.

A little update for you all...

The website is now up (www.nodiz.co.uk) though it is still being added to.

The first competative use of the NODIZ Pro was last weekend at Wiscombe, and again this weekend at Gurston ona 205GTI. The car went from 105bhp as it came in, to 133 with bike carbs, to 147 with a NODIZ fitted and the ignition properly mapped...

Also, the software is complete and sports 3D mapping, as well as analogue gauges.

It is also now fully working with its integrated bluetooth module, so no more wirs when setting up, and some will be pleased to here that we are currently writing an Android front end for tuning on your mobile, as well as datalogging (using the phones GPS etc) and the datalog view system is being written also.

The final protoype layout integrating everything in a surface mount package is here Monday, and after a test of its hardware, an initial batch of 50 will be ordered.

At that point I will be offering a group 'beta test' buy for a reduced price, so you guys can get out there, play, and request any features you would like to see added to the software.

All in all exciting times!

Cheers Matt
