Eunos Roadster MX5 1.6 Donor or project car

Up for sale is my MX5. Either view as a project or engine/kit car donor. To get a garage to fix will be up to £695 (quoted by a not-cheap garage!) but could be more like £150 for someone who can weld and use a spanner. I've spent a lot of time and money on getting the engine running right and servicing it.

Model: Eunos Roadster (mazda MX5 import) 1.6 Petrol
Year: 1989 G reg, import
Mileage: Reads 200km, who knows
Tax: None
MOT: None (see below)
Pics: Below
Transmission: 5 speed manual
Location: Milton Keynes

Price: £450 but open to offers

Reluctant sale. Love the car but has failed MOT and new found running hobby is taking all my time and cash!

Full failure sheets below and also had garage quote for all work needed (see bottom post). Basically needs two weld on sill, a fair few dust covers replacing on front suspension and brakes looking at (handbrake needs stripping down and cleaning, and front discs although not a failure are fairly corroded from 6 months of standing).
Also minor headlight adjustment and an oil leak (weeping sump plug the garage said, so new washer).

Basically I bought the car about a year ago, sound but with running issues.

During the course of diagnosing the problem and general maintenance it's had-
replacement coil pack
replacement AFM
New HT leads
New spark plugs
New rear fuel filter (pig of a job)
Replaced ignition module
Oil and filter change
New coolant temp sensor
Coolant flush and fill
New earth strap on engine block to chassis
Finally I found whoever did the last cambelt change had put it on one tooth off from the crank. So it's had a new cam cover gasket whilst resetting cam timing for 14deg BTDC mod and now pulls excellently, nice at low revs but then kicks at 4k. It's very addictive!

Started it up last week, first time since September and it fired up first time, really great engine now.

I started lightening and modding the car for speed and possible track use so it's also had -
Clock faces changed for mph ones
Manual windows fitted
Lightweight door cards
Stripped carpet (have in loft to go with it)
Removed charcoal canister
Removed some useless junk in nose cone
Removed aircon unit under dash (compressor is next to go)
Rear strut brace/cabin brace behind front seats
Front splitter
DIY rad cover in nose cone (unprotected rads as standards)

Other mods -
CD player fitted, connected to headrest speakers and Fli door speakers.
New lead made up for boot brake light
Sticker bomb centre console
Mercedes carbon fibre gear knob

Also available for haggling/offers-
K+N panel filter.
Front TRS tow hook web style in orange.
Rear carbing type tow eye in orange (fixed metal bracket)

Work priced up - at Fast Fit garage to get an MOT –
1 -Track rod ends and tracking £85 x2, plus £30 tracking.
2 – Either new upper suspension arms £290 x2
OR
2 – Upper suspension arm bushes £95 x2
3 – Welding £250
4 – Headlamp adjust £25
5 – Clean and adjust rear brakes £30

So cheapest the garage will do the work for is £695, or £1085 for new suspension arms. Personally I think their prices are a little steep both on parts and labour.

Bushes seems about £7 a pair on ebay, need 4 sets I think, and track rod arms are £18 each on ebay. Obviously brakes are a zero cost item if doing yourself. Headlamp adjust could also be free with a friendlier garage! Welding is also cheap if you can do it, if not £250 seems a little high could possibly get cheaper elsewhere.

Other works on advisories – lower ball joint £110 x2
Oil leak is the sump plug is weeping, so either needs new washer or new plug.
They also quoted £170 for new front discs and pads as they are a bit corroded (not been used in 6 months).

Damn it I'd have that if you were nearer :/
Silly question but why are they quoting for suspension bushes (or even the whole arm ) when the MOT faliure sheet doesnt even mention them? Think they're trying a fast one there!

Fair point actually, the dust covers are all that's needed and £7 a pair on eBay. May try and get a cheaper quote elsewhere. Downside is even if I get on the road, due to only having 1 years NCB and it still being a high insurance group car I'm looking at nearly £500 insurance! My last few cars have been classics and were barely over £100.

Likewise - if you was closer I'd have that just for giggles on the track.

Had a lot of questions regards the hood. Yes it does have one! Despite a lot of photos I have none of it up but will try and get some this week. It's pretty good nick, not new but no tears etc, just some signs of wear on the folds, and some extra silicon along bottom edge of window by previous owner but seemed watertight when out in the rain (kept in garage all but a few weeks by me). The window is clear and unlike most cheap MX5, it does not use duct tape as a main ingredient.
