Google View

Have just seen the Google car cruising round our area of Brum. Carries a strange football-sized green cage on its roof, mounted on small pylon. Presume there are cameras on gimbals inside said football thingy.

So what does Google get out of all this recorded/uploaded pictorial data?? Who buys such un-refined data? Needs very careful processing to allow Google, or their customers, to distil anything of value. How's your paranoia today?

Off the top of my head, apart from the advertsing revune google gets from being the destination search engine, companines like estate agencies (right move etc) all use it. im sure there are lots more.

Mega web site hit numbers.

Name another other place that you can go to that will allow you to see any address and any location in the world. Be it Google maps, view or sky. They have the lot.

+ the reason they have their own fleet of jets parked across the road from their headquarters (including a 767, if memory serves).... because they have the money....

They were collecting WiFi details as part of it originally, to help find your location on mobiles, but they stopped doing that after a bit of an uproar.....

Insurance companies use it to check the address you keep your car when quoting.

I got a quote from adrian flux a while ago and wanted to keep the car at a secure premises they went on line and googled it and turned me down there and then saying t was too isolated. The last quote they checked to see if the address existed and there was a garage as stated.

If I was in the insurance business I'd do the same type of risk assessment.

Another option which I use at work a lot - is Bing maps.

It doesnt do the streetview, but also does a thing called birds eye view, handy for us as we can get views from the compass points around the property. Puts an oblique angle on the view.
