Noisy ford TDCI

My mondy TDCI, seems to me, to be a very noisy engine, and has that clatter clatter sound,
M8's TDCI in a focus, same spec ish as mine is so much quieter

So my options are .............................
or do i have to llive with mine sounding like an old diesel truck

Hi
My transit van has a 2ltr turbo diesel & the clatter got really noisy when idling, goes away when you rev it.
Changed the oil & filter which quietened it down considerably.
My engine does not have a timing belt but is chain driven & Thats what makes the clatter,
You live with it, get it done (loadsa dosh), or do it yourself kit costs around £150 or less ?.

SWMBO TDCI

The wife had a problem very similar to this after the car had been in for a Ford service. It turned out to be a displaced piece of sound deading in the brake pedal bulkhead orafice.

Most likely cause on these engines if no other symptoms is a noisy crank pulley
I didnt believe it either when a friend diagnosed mine as I had lived with the noise for over 6 months thinking the engine or the diesel pump was on its way out.
Warm the engine up and leave on tick over (sounds like a tractor) then poor water over the belts and pullies hey presto the clatter disapears= crank pulley is shot. Try it before spending any money and let us know if it works on yours

Which Mondy? Mk4s have a totally different engine to Mk3s.

2008 mondy, is that a 4 0r a 5?
mines a 2008. and m8's is a 2009, but looks the same as mine,

Did it turn out to be the crank pulley then?. On the tdci these are damped, when the damping fails they induce shock waves into the auxillary drive belt causing a real clatter that makes them sound like an old tractor with a dodgey fuel pump.

Unlucky as the crank pulley would have been your cheapest fix. I would still get it checked before spending money on anything else even though the water test didnt work. When the guy (ex Ford engineer) did it on mine the differance was unbelievable if only for a few seconds while everything was wet. He explained that the water acts as a temporary lubricant on the pulleys and belts and that reduces the shock waves and consequently the induced noise. Mine was a 50K 2007 tdci

had a transit connect 1.8tdci last week sounded like a tractor that needed a software upgrade seems ok now

there is a software update by ford for injectors dependind on which ones your engine has (1.8 lynx diesel ) other noises could be down to crank pulleys,tensioner or the all to common dual mass flywheel.
