duty from US
Hi all, looking at some die from http://www.affordablebender.com/collections/affordable-benders-tube-notchers/products/additional-bending-die
They will ship to the UK for 45usd however what do I pay in the way of duty in to the UK

Thats what I made it. Convert total cost from dollars to pounds in this case about £128 then add the 20% vat and thats the duty you pay. So 128x20% =
about £26 in duty

You will have to pay vat on the total ie the price of the product and the shipping. If this is over a certain amount (can't remember off the top
of my head what the threshold is) then you will pay import duty as well, then there's post office handling on top. For most of the stuff
I've been bringing in from the states it works out approximately the same as replacing the dollar sign with the pound sign

I imported a protools bender with a couple of dies, it was a thousand dollars including carriage, by the time I paid the various the duties, it was a
thousand pounds. Basically it's as chillis says

Ask them to ship it as a gift, then you wont pay.

The UK Agent Parcelforce, DHL or whoever will also charge a handling fee if they pay the duty for you, I got 200 dollars worth of parts delivered this
week, VAT & Handling was £39, 31 VAT and 8 Handling.

20% VAT on the price + shipping, then an additional 10% Import Duty on that figure. So around $64 (£40) in charges.
Then around a £10 handling charge by the agent delivering it.

Its the other way round
Item Cost + Shipping
then add 10% Duty (Dont know if this is for all items some may be exempt from Duty)

I always remember 10% as that is what it was to import a car when I bought one from Japan about 8 years ago.
Then add 20% of (Item Cost+Shipping+Duty) for VAT (Robbing Bastards)
Works out to 32% then add the Couriers charge ontop
Some arent too bad I think Royal Mails the worst
Just had a check and it seems anything below £135 you dont have to pay Duty just VAT.
Below £15 you dont have to pay anything.
Also gifts over £40 you have to pay VAT and over £135 you have to pay Duty and VAT.
