Bike Engine Weights

Hi All,

I know there is a chart on the westfeild site for engine options and weights but im not sure as to its accuracy, is it worth compiling a few options on here for refference. Power can be upto each individuals prefference as to where they would like to take it from as it depends on where the engine was tested, how it was tested, etc etc. I suppose it is still upto how an engine is weighed whether it be 'lubricated' or not, with headers, airbox, starter motor but these details could at least be input next to the engine weight if not attached. Everyone here seems a pretty freindly bunch so i wouldnt expect any willy waving to who's got the lightest engine with the most power output.

Is this a daft idea?, the reason being is i have been trawling the net trying to find this info myself and have a few figures that i of course dont mind sharing for easier refference for everyone:



Kawasaki ZZR 1400 2010 crate engine everything bar ex headers = 107 kg

Yamaha 5PW R1 = 60.5Kg

CBR 1000 2008 = 62.5kg

The problem is always that engines are weighed by different people using different equipment. Some weigh with headers, carb/throttle bodies, oil full etc, some weigh the just bare engine (sometimes even without the alternator), dry.

What are you trying to achieve with the figures. Base engine weight differences of 10-20kg aren't really a consideration unless on the track, in which case there seems to be a tendency to choose what last season's class winner used

My bare engine and gearbox weighed just over 70 kg from what I remember, could just carry it down the drive and into the workshop.

Did you read the initial post in its entirety, it mentions different weight issues and proposes a solution.

The reason being is one to pure interest , I cant be the only one that has searched for bike engine weights, rather like the gearing chart. Secondly you are right 10_20 kg wouldn't make that much difference in the same car but kits these days in different trim levels differ tremendously in weight based on their low weights in the first place.

A lightened caterham fireblade has been down to 390 kg, my race fury 425kg with the same engine, there are reports of locost upwards of 500kg with bike engines in , I know of two that race successfully. That's 100+ kg difference, so engine choice even at road level would make a difference if some one had either of these choices and was in a wonder as what route to go down. We have already highlighted 30kg plus of a diff without investigating the zzr, a weight I was given for a package as mentioned above. Threads like this need positive properly collated data to achieve accurate results as said Willy waving need not apply

I am looking at competition level, I raced a 300bhp duratec for five years no I'm going back to bike engines. Number crunching is the key to getting a competitive car to start with, so weights, are as important as ratios and final drives, then its driver ability....the hard bit haha. spreading info obtained can't be a bad thing when gone about in a proper way.

Honda

Fireblade 893cc 62.5 KG
Cbr 900 893 = 68kg with oil.
CBR 1000 2008 = 62.5kg
CBR 1000 '04/'05 65.8kg for '04/'05.

Suzuki

Suzuki gsxr1100wp minus carbs and fluids ~78kg
1.3 Hayabusa 92kg

Kawasaki

ZX10 looks like it might be 68 kg
Zzr1100 = 97kg

It hasn't raced before, this year it will be running the Sports 2000 Championship.
Indeed a hewland sequential. Didn't have a bike engine before. as it is purpose built for that championship.
