I know it's a long shot but was hoping someone might have upgraded engine over the winter or found one down the back of the sofa. You never know :-)

Airbox

I may have a Reverie air box available if it will not adapt to the Keihin carbs I have just bought, this is the carbon fibre model with cone shaped K&N filter. They cost over £700 so I would be looking for £300 if I can no longer use it. Regards Simon

Hi Simon

Thanks for your reply. That sounds interesting but I hope for you/your wallet's sake that is fits for you. If you can't get it working could you share the model number so i can look up some more details on it please?

Airbox

Sorry for the delayed response, been watching the WRC.

Yes that's the one, I use a large Naca duct directly to it.

Thanks, that looks perfect.

Mine is an RRV so i'll need to do some digging and see if this is going to cause a problem. First stop lings honda to check part numbers in the surrounding areas.

Thanks again, please let me know if this does become spare :-)

Airbox

No problem

I have had it fitted to a couple of different sets of Fireblade carbs in my Fisher Fury race car and with it fitted directly to the Naca duct I had to block off the air jets, fit a Dynojet kit and increase the main jets quite a bit, it then made about 150bhp at the flywheel on 2 different dyno's.

I should know at the weekend as the engine is coming out then.

Thanks. I have a Fury too (ex RGB race car). Did you have to modify the bonnet at all for this airbox or did it fit under the existing hump.

It's already got a dynojet kit fitted but i'm not sure on the jet size at the moment. I'm assuming I may have to change this whatever airbox i go for.

I'm still very new too all this so am not too sure what you mean by blocking off the air jets but i'm sure i'll get there with a bit of googling, trial and error. It's running slightly rich at the moment with the pipercross panel filter so maybe that means the jets are already 'generous' and i may be ok.

150bhp is impressive from a older fireblade especially on a dyno without any ram-air effect. My priority is reducing noise for the strict track limits now but if i can get a performance boost then that's even better.

I had a look at RRV vs RRW and the carbs are different between the models but interestingly the airboxes are identical which is a good start.

Thanks again

Chris

airbox

The engine is an AB Performance blue printed engine and is very good. I did modify the bonnet with a small bulge to clear the tubular part of the airbox but it was less than the original Fireblade airbox from memory. We block of the air correctors for racing but I don't know if you need to for a road or track car, you could ask Andy at AB as he will know.

Thanks. I spoke to Andy earlier actually, he's so helpful but until I know a bit more there are limits to how much i can take in from him :-)

I'll assume that i'll need to adapt the bonnet as it's a pipercross panel filter installed at the moment which has quite a low clearance compared to any airboxes I've seen. The bonnet is off at the moment so I can't quite measure the clearances.

I'll do some reading on tuning carbs. It may be that they are already blocked off. The carbs were fitted to an AB blue printed engine too but that is currently sat in my shed with gearbox issues and the fitted/running engine hasn't had the same attention from Andy. Carbs, were one of many things transferred between engines. I have just removed a needle and can confirm it is a dynojet (3rd notch from top) but have no idea on size and cannot find out how to measure it.

My car isn't road legal and so is used only on track which complicates getting the setup right.

Thanks again

I bought a Fury Blade 919 from a member of the forum last June. He told me that the engine was installed by AB to replace a racing engine with problem to the box. The Fury was used on road. I was told that the racing engine had 150 bhp instead of the standard 128 bhp engine actually installed. Could be that the engine reaches 150 bhp only by dyno-jetting and so using the same carbs the power is or should be 150 bhp on the standard engine, or other components are involved and should be modified and/or replaced to have 150bhp?

How can I be sure that the carbs are dyno-jetted? There is only a possible set of dyno jets or differents for different pourpose/power? The engine is running rich and retaining it's original airbox (with K&N filter) cutted to avoid interference with the bonnet as in the photos of the Reverie installation instructions, but I don't know if this is enough to assume it is dyno-jetted.

If you check the needles the dynojet ones have from memory 3 groves while the standard ones only have one, it is also worth checking what main jet size you have, again Andy of AB is the best man to ask the right grove to use and main jet size. Whatever set up you have its worth getting it put on a good dyno with someone who understands bike engines to get the best from them, I now tend to use Daytuner in Harrogate as they are close to me in North Yorkshire. Thank you Simon. In Italy there aren't specialists for BEC car and only 10 Fury with different engines. Not time this evening to check the carbs, but I will follow your suggestion in the next evenings.

I will also try again to contact Andy for a little help.

Sorry Massimo I didn't realise you were in Italy. I will be taking my engine out at the weekend and will strip the carbs down if you want me to photograph the needle position, I will also check to see what main jets I am running and show you which air corrector we block off.

Kind regards
Simon

It just so happens that I removed a carb needle last night and took a quick snap - it's not ideal but does show a set of needle positions and a 'c' clip that allows you to set how high/low it sits. There are 6 positions and mine is currently set on the third from the top for a 919 RRV with Pipercross PX600 panel filter. A washer is also shown still on the needle below the 'c' clip.

Airbox

Hi Massimo

I have checked my carbs and the settings are as follows, the dynojet has the circlip fitted in the 2nd grove from the flat and of the needle and there is a small washer fitted underneath this. I run 135 main jets and the middle hole is blocked off under the bell mouth, I have put a picture in my file as I don't know how to add it to this message.

Hi Simon,

Thank you for your replay. Today I passed some hours surfing in the net searching info on the matter. I found that with standard airbox modified to improve the airflow:

http://www.fireblades.org/forums/how-articles/98349-how-viking-mod-for-more-power-carb-blades-only.html

you can uprate the main jet size to 140. I havei the standard airbox cutted so that the filter, K&N, is directly exposed to the air and can stay under the bonnet without interference, but is sucking hot air very closed to the bonnet so the whole is ot very efficient. In the next days I will check the size of mail jet and which kind of settima I have, so that we can compare.

Hi Massimo, that sounds like it will work, I used larger rubber inlet pipes on my original airbox, I also use a large 100mm Naca duct to supply cold air to my Reverie airbox, I find this works very well, I also used a similar system with my original airbox and AB airbox. I have put a picture of this in my library.
