I first remember him as a then unknown actor in a BBC series to encourage adult literacy called "On The Move", always at his best playing characters that were always a little out of their depth the picture that he will be most remembered for is "The Long Good Friday" in which he was absolutely perfect as the east end gangster who's empire crumbled over the course of a week.

Shame

Indeed 71 is no age nowadays. Oddly my favourite film of his is who framed Roger Rabbit, he played that part superbly.

I remember seeing him in that "On the Move" series. Also he starred in an early Richard Gere movie, name of which is lost in the depths of my subconcious, playing a South American police chief to Gere's hooker-servicing doctor. So long ago, when Gere was very dark-haired!
