Pinto running problems

Just broken down lol! Symptoms are hard to start and after 5 mins it starts to backfire and gradually dies. I'm thinking the timing is out. Do those symptoms sound likeiit's too advanced or retarded? And which way to turn the dizzy to correct it?!

Cheers!

Sounds more like a fueling problem or an overheating coil.
Carb or injection?
What type of ignition.?

Fuel pressure gauge says 2 psi which does sound low. It's the old distributor with a lumenition fitted, and dellortos.

This will get you started if ignition is out just swing the dizzy a little either way till you get a smooth idle then use a timing light

having trouble uploading the other diagram
It's similar but with front pully and timing mark
So on posted diagram substitute cam belt drive woodruf key for outer pully TDC mark and timing indicator on alloy casing.
This sets the spark static to 0 degrees you then swing the dizzy so spark shows 8 degrees or a little more with a timing light

Strange thing is that we did the timing a few weeks back, and it ran loads better. Now the battery is half flat though, which could be the problem. But it's the popping from the carbs that made me think timing again.

Does 2 psi sound low?

Cheers!

It's an electric one in the back. Thinking of it, I bought the car as a non runner and one of the things wrong was the fuel pump sticking and blowing its fuse, so this is definitely a suspect part!

Popping back through carbs can also be a symptom of weak mixture. Fuel pump could be a suspect as you said.

It's idling fine and revving well now, so quite likely that is just running out of fuel after a while with the throttle open. Cheers for the help guys. I think I'll get a bike carb pump off eBay.

Cheers!

I charged the battery up, and it ran fine. Had a nice little blast in fact. Did snap a cycle wing mind...

I guess it just needs a rough shake down and some basic testing. Cheers for all the help.
