confused- steering column question
I was advised that I had some play in the UJ on the steering column. So with the nice weather I thought that I would look to replace it.
started this afternoon, and am confused. It has the sierra triangle female part, but the other end of the UJ is welded on to the column going down to
the steering column.
Is this normal? How do I replace the UJ then?
Sorry for the idiot questions.
Car is an MK indy.

Looks normal for a shortened steering assy. Could the play be in the firewall bush? I've used a self aligning bearing in mine.

The play is definitely in the UJ circled and the weld on the left hand circle.
how do I replace the UJ?

Grind off the uj and weld on a new one. I am just building mine , it's just a ford Sierra uj its welded to a set length piece of round bar , uj
is welded to one end the other is welded to the rubber part that fits to steering rack.( not literally welded to the rubber part)
When building an mk , mk themselves modify this part for you .

Sure someone local will weld it for you, if I wasn't so far away I would do it for ya!

I would remove the bar and check the other end is ok maybe replace that too. But no other option that I can think of

Unless you want to look at changing the column section for a different shape, ie triangular, and have new bolt on joints, the only real option is to
get a new UJ welded on. If you can cut the old one off cleanly and clean the column up, it'll only take a few minutes to weld that. Few quid in
cash should see it done at a local fabricators.

Carbuildersolutions do a sierra to escort UJ which you can bolt to a escort spline. How long is it? You can get a splined shaft in 300mm, 400mm or
600mm I believe.

thanks for all the posts people.
So if I can grind it off, has anyone see a ford sierra triangle part that can be welded on, as most as far as I can see are designed to be wrapped and
bolted around a splined column, or is it simply more grinding/fabrication needed on the downside element of the UJ?
