Zetec SE

I have changed my mind and going to change engine I have fitted, looking at the SE engine as had one in a Fiesta and it was a great small reviing engine so question is what gearbox as the type 9 is getting a lot rarer now is there any other you can use? I have seen a few things else where that state it was a mazda engine (this was on the internet so my be horse Sh*te) if so is there a mazda box. Other thing has anyone done a list of parts you would need to do for rear wheel conversion. ie, flywheel, clutch

Cheers

I have the 1.7 version in my anglia. The engine is not mazda it was designed by yamaha for ford.

The 1.6 version is a bit easier to fit than the 1.7 as it has no vct variable valve stuff and the spigot bearing cavity in the end of the crank is a stsndard ford size (21mm iirc).

As for gearbox, type 9 needs a new bell housing from tiger/Westfield/Caterham/rwdmotorsport/shawspeed.

There is a thread on turbosport about the rx8 6 speed gearbox (same as the is200 and mk3 mx5) but it is the only one that has the same input shaft spline and diameter the same as ford so you can keep the oem flywheel and clutch. The guy on turbosport in the thread can make up adaptors for a few beer token, I think he now has an eBay shop.

What are you doing for ecu and fueling, Chester sports cars do a bike carb kit that releases about 145hp or have a look at my blodg (link in sig) for a bike throttle body setup. Jenko on here also has a lot of info on this engine (1.7 as well) on his blog using gsxr tbs.

Other stuff to think about -

Engine mounts
There is a water manifold that doubkes as a coil pack mount on the back of the engine that may clash with the bulkhead, there is a low profile alternative from shawspeed
With the water and ac pump removed you will need a shorter fan belt, I think 6 rib 1195mm is the one to use
Not sure about sump, the 1.6 is a decent shape and has a windage plate but may need baffling
Exhaust manifold, have a look at spencer ashley/pepper performance, they do a weld-your-own kit for the vindicator whick may work otherwise DanST eng do a flange
Inlet side / ecu see previous post
If you want to tune a bit the shawspeed ss4 cam, arp rod bolts and heavy duty valve springs will see 8k revs and a few extra horses

This looks like a reasonable spec to start from, throttle bodies and a decent exhaust should see a few more ponies.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies found a guy that will do the adaptor plate for the engine to gearbox. So will get the holiay out of the road, pull out the rover V8 and get that and the LT77 box up for sale and start looking for engine and box to use.

Cheers

What gearbox are you running, if using the mazda what clutch you using (the mk2 5 speed has better ratios I think), if not did you go for the rx8 6 speed, I would be interested to see how you get . This is on the upgrade path for my anglia, currently have a stock type 9 on shawsped bell housing, options are for a long 1st type 9, rx8 6 speed or cosworth t5.

Beaver34 - be interested to see what you go with as well.

For me it is more about ratios than power (planning on 150hp with maybe an expansion to 175hp in the future) and also cost.

From what I have gleaned -

Stock type 9 - good for about 150hp in a light car, very short 1st gear, big drop to 2nd, cost t replace currently around £200 for a 2nd hand box but will need a refurb - note v6 version has slightly better 1st gear but needs a spacer to fit most bell housings (longer input shaft)
HD long 1st Type 9 (BGH, 1st motion SPC etc) - good for upto 240hp, better 1st-2nd ratios, cost between £1000-1500 depending on ratios
Aisin AZ6 - Mazda MX-5, Mazda RX-8 (has Ford input shaft), Lexus IS200, Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ, Nissan 200sx s15 - good for over 250hp (200sx is turbo and has quite a bit of torque also) - 6 speed - 1st gear the same as type 9 then gears 2-5 are similar to a rocket box (just use gears 2-6 unless doing a hill start) - cost £150 plus £100 adaptor ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Aisin_transmissions#Longitudinal_rear-wheel_drive )
Cosworth T5 - (also found in TVR but gear stick further forward) - good for 250hp+ again - similar ratios to long 1st type 9 - cost approx. £700 SH then may need refurb - getting rarer
Mazda MX5 NA8A/NB8A 5 speed - the ratios for this look OK and should be readily available and Ok for £170hp, needs clutch sorting as different spline to Ford, £? http://www.miata.net/garage/KnowYourCar/S8_Gears.html
Caterham 6 speed type 9 - good for around 240hp (r500) - very close ratio with a 1:1 6th gear - cost £1200-1500 SH

Then there are the TranX and Quaife straight cut boxes, SPC do a Tracsport close ratio helical or a Quaife Semi-helical close ratio gear kit that looks interesting if you have the budget.
