More power!!!! I'm desperate! ;)

Evening all

I'm sure you've all hear this before but I'm going to ask anyway. Haha

I'm currently running a pinto on zx9 carbs which is pretty entertaining as it is however I need more power.
The dilemma is, do I sink money into the pinto or do I do an engine swap?

Is there an easy or logical pinto out and X in ie type 9 retained and prop etc?

I go playing with a couple of caterham boys who run k series superlights. I NEED to keep up!

Please advise. Don't mind a bit of winter work.

I guess set depends on the size of your wallet. A Duratec has the advantage that the zoster can be made to fit using your current Pinto setup, which would help costs. You still need to add the management and fueling side of things, which adds up. I suspect you won't see much change from £1500, but would transform your car and give you 180-200bhp once setup....

Best option, if finances permit, is to dispose of the Pinto powered thing. OK, so your idea of it's 'value' probably won't stand market scrutiny, but nonetheless, you'll create some garage space. Then you can go shopping for a complete car, preferably with a motorcycle engine. Anything that's not too historically powered (i.e. is injected) will be far quicker than what you have.

Alternatively, strip out the Pinto and gearbox from the original car and simply drop in a bike engine. It needn't be a 1300-1400, it can be a simple 1 litre, cheap and cheerful... I had the same 'decision' to make a while back with an SE Riot... went one litre.

What's your thoughts on that. I do like the sound of the BEC option

If I was going Bec the bird would be way down th list unfortunately!
There's a bargain blade package on here a few days ago. That will be in a different league!

There was a lot of engine failures with blackbird engines in kit cars,iirc the engine casings are not very strong and flex causing the crankshaft to go tight and they then chuck rods.

Just do a lot of research on bike engines,as in which ones just need a baffle plate in the sump and which need dry sump set-ups etc as this can easily double the cost of your engine conversion.

I'll give you the Pinto upgrade options
The cheapest upgrade is an injection head with Rhienz 1.3mm gasket and a skim to get 10.5 to 1 compression and a Kent FR33 or Piper 285 and a rolling road set up
This will get a minimum 135bhp could be near 150bhp
The next step is a decent head with big valves, steel rods and forged pistons, in all honesty by this stage the Duratec starts to look affordable and should see closer to 200bhp with just a pair of cams

Daniel is entirely 'right', from my experience on the circuits, avoid the Blackbird. Great for visiting the Supermarket, not so great when taking on Combe.

Obvious choice is the Hayabusa. Beyond a visit to Tesco, you'll need a dry sump, etc., so it all gets costly. If you're the only person on here (other than me) that isn't wealthy, then unless you can get a good package then the costs escalate.

Mr Bate's Blade options appear good - I have no direct experience of these, just see them in use. Yamaha's R1 (5VY) is (in my experience) good if a tad lazy these days - they will not break (I never managed a total destruction), very simple, just a baffle, tuneable, sod all torque, but they sscccreeeaaammmm. GSX-R1000's are my favourite, but again dry sumps are a good idea, though not essential up a hill - they have liked to shed bearings when unhappy, incredible torque though on the early ones.

Buy a R1-5VY, ride the bike, crash the bike and then salvage the engine!

Don't totally disregard older carbed engines, with a decent re-jet and set up they are still awesome in a BEC.
My carbed R1 is running a worked head and when re-jetted did 167bhp on rollers.

Im just doing an engine swap in one of mine to ST170 running on bike Carbs, Nodiz ignition with a VVT contoller.

I went from 1700 x flow to carb zx9 plenty of go in it. And I have a turbo to fit over the winter.
