Hi all - 4wd suitable donor???

Hi all,
Just purchased a locost bare chassis with the intention of using my xr4x4 as a donor vehicle..
Is it possible to use the complete drivetrain from under the sierra or am I best changing to 2wd.. Figure its going to be problems with front driveshafts maybe gearbox tunnel???

You figure right...

Not much use are the 4x4 apart from diff, axle and rear hubs.

You will need non-PAS rack and steering column, front hubs, non 4x4 prop-shaft etc

But the LSD diff is good

The gearbox isnt any good being four wheel drive. youll need to get a type 9 gearbox.
best bit is the diff is a LSD.

p.s. nothing to do with drugs

do you want to use the engine from the xr4x4? if not, i would recommend buying a complete sierra >£100 (much less!), using that as a donor, swap the diffs, and sell the xr with an open diff as a complete car.

Beware! Bourettes is binfectious.

You could always speak to Ewan Spence - can't remember his handle on here.

His car uses the 4WD setup from an XR4x4

Like your thinking joel and thanks guys for the info..
my intention is to use the 4x4 engine as I know its a good one..this donor's doors are shot so is one wheel arch.. It hasn't rotted in the usual places but what the hell I only bought it due to the fact it has a technics turbo conversion from new...and is completely standard running 6 psi boost, low compresion etc..
Mechanically its been looked after but bodily its a 17 year old sierra....

I'll pull the motor and rear drive train and break the rest of the car.
For what I paid for it I'll get back a bit of money breaking the sum of parts...cossie seats etc..
whatever's left will go to the scrappy..

Reckon on type 9 then??..Out of interest will the cossie T5 box go to a cologne V6???

non p/s rack
but I'll need the column from mine..
anything else I'm likely to need???
obviously loom etc...
Any additional strengthening required on chassis considering my build.
Must admit I'm slightly concerned about putting 250 bhp through it at the minute!!

my chassis hoping to collect next w/end:-

Dont forget all the small electrical widgets from under the bonnet and fuel pump/filter,also the wheels to move it about while your building it all small "nothing" items but all will cost you something at the scrappers if you havent got them

Front brakes, as they are better than the standard sierra ones.

amazingly, its ewanspense

as he seems to have been building his deviant car just about as long as i have, id say its a good advert for keeping things simple.

if you want a straightforward build, dont use a 4wd donor.

if you are in in for the long term technical excellence of it, and dont mind reading a whole string of 'passed sva im on the road' posts from people that started their build way after you, then a deviant car is the way to go

don't listen to all those 2wd'ers

If you want 4wd then go for it, nothing is impossible , all it poses is a few more challenges.

As for the comment about the time I have taken, the amount of work I have completed so far was completed in a similar amount of time as a standard build (new house and planning for the off spring took me off the build.

A turboe technics would be a nice addition.

I used a standard width chassis, built the tunnel round the box and props and it all fits.

any questions let me know.

thanks ewan..
when the chassis lands (hopefully next week)...
I'll start to get my head around things maybe you can let me know the pitfalls before I actually make my mind up which route I'm going to go..
I would prefer this to be a relatively straight forward build but am not totally dismissing 4wd at this stage...
I was a design engineer before joining the motor trade so I'm sure I am capable of over-engineering it!! (LOL)

Nowt wong with going 4WD (specially with 250bhp) but it's plenty of extra work! Nothing that can't be done, mind.

http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=22720

Whatever way you go, you need to look out for a 2WD sump for your 2.8 and if you go 2WD you'll need to find a V6 box - getting hard to find. Best bet might be to find someone who can put a 2WD back end on your existing 4x4 box. This can be done for both type-9 and MT75 boxes to 'make' V6 2WDs.

Best of luck,

Liam

thanks liam I really needed to see them pics...

awesome build mate I'm mighty impressed specially with the inboard coiley's..
steering column's a work of art too...

Still undecided about mine although I must admit I am leaning towards it being a RWD tyre destroyer...

please read as:-
(easier) - (quicker to build) - (lighter?)...
It'll just have to have wider tyres!!!

Collect chassis next weekend

At what is 4x4 needed (as opposed to want) to get any more power transphered to the ground rather than turned into noise and tyre smoke.
What is the practical upper limit for 2wd in a 7 style car?

I owned a standard 4x4 sierra many moons ago and there is no way the thing would wheelspin in the dry no matter how much abuse I gave it.. I believe the standard xr4x4 was about 150bhp..
my technics one has another 100 bhp on that and believe me it is a lot of difference.
To drive its just like a rear wheel drive car back end breaks away on roundabouts, If I didn't know better I'd say it didn't have any front drive shafts (I checked it has) - LOL
And you don't half know it if you try to pull away quick it just smokes tyres (avon's)...
BUT
I remember a friend of mine (big cossie freak) being taken for a ride in a caterham westie type thing with a 300bhp cossie turbo in it..
He reckoned the traction on the RWD was phenomenal (spelling) mostly due to the fact as there wasn't as much weight in the thing..
I'm hoping this is going to be the case with mine...

Does anyone agree with that??

Thats the thing with the right car, we for instance how much power do F1 cars put to the ground via a 2wd system.

Mind a 300hp on 7 style car seams plenty to me.

been a while since I posted been DIY'ing - house move imminent..!! Hence why the sierra donor's not been completely broken up yet...I have sold the seats, carpet, bumpers etc.. to get some cash together to pay for the luego IRS conversion..

UPDATE:-
chassis - still as was (BEC) requiring modification to luego IRS setup..and major trannie tunnel mod's..
I have however just purchased a RWD MT75 box and 2wd sump so at least the mechanical component side of things is starting..
need to keep the sierra rolling at the moment due to the afore mentioned house move so just collecting parts at the moment...

build costs so far (someone say locost!!!) more like hi-cost

sierra turbo donor £700 ouch!!
chassis £51
MT75 rwd BOX £95
ROLL BAR - £30

£876

monies reclaimed from donor breakup so far:-
£50 - seats
£50 - carpet
£40 - indicators and bumpers etc..

TOTAL COST SO FAR £736
