live axel disc conversion

As the title says really.

Has anyone converted the escort mk2 axel to discs? If so what does it involve and is it worth it??

Cheers Mark

Hi Mark,
I have done the conversion and it is not too difficult, remove drums backing plates ect.
I sourced discs and calipers from a fwd ford laser(SA model) although I have heard that you can use sierra/saphire bits.
The discs need to be machined to fit over the escort axle and are located by the wheel studs(108 PCD). The calipers are mounted onto a plate which is secured to the axle by the exsisting backing plate bolts. Worthwhile conversion.

cheers

The brackets are available from burton power etc. Looks easy enough to do.
I thought they used sierra rear calipers?

As mentioned strip off the old drum brake parts.

You need to source Mk4 Ford Escort front discs. You will also need to get the BOLT ON type axle brackets (available from various rallyparts places) Note the washers on the diagram for spacing (allows you to get the caliper sitting true)

Description
Description

[You can get weld on brackets but then you have to source different offset brake discs due to the caliper sitting inboard more etc etc....]

You will also need to take some meat off the curved section of the bracket so that the casing of the caliper does not catch on it as it moves (the left hand side section where the <------- 90mm-------> is)

Finally a pair of 2wd sierra/granada rear calipers (They are all the same apart from the 4x4 vented ones which are wider)

DON'T (No offence Ham) use fwd ford front calipers for the conversion.

1. They don't have a handbrake level pull.
2. They are way over powered and only suited to thier original application

The hub face will need attacking to reduce its diameter till the Mk4 escort disc can slip over it.

HTH

Cheers

G

Normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work and driving through traffic in a
car that you are still paying for - in order to get to the job you need to pay for the clothes
and the car, and the house you leave vacant all day so you can afford to live in it.
